What do you think about the LPGA's proposed "English-only" policy?

Asked by JackAdams (6574points) August 31st, 2008

Starting next year, if you are a golfer on the LPGA tour, you are gonna be required to speak English only, or you get suspended until you learn English. Please examine this NY Times article about it, then comment.

I think that’s some douchebaggery right there.

I can’t reason this one, aside from racism of course.

It’s definitely a display of prejudice, I agree, but I don’t think it is race-based, because, Anthropologically speaking, Hispanics are Caucasians, and the majority of them speak either Portuguese or Spanish.

So, I think it is a cultural prejudice, rather than a racial one.

I wish more things had an “English only” policy…......like the mail I get….it’s all in Spanish, even the 400 page ikea catalog I got in the mail a few weeks ago is in Spanish…

Cheeb, you must be on a “spanish” list somewhere. I get tons of junk mail, and none of it is in spanish.

I’m going to go the other way and say I kind of get what the LPGA is doing here, from a business perspective. The Korean women are AMAZING golfers. The LPGA will, inevitably, want to market those players and capitalize on their success. That being said, if they can’t speak a lick of English, that’s going to be difficult. I think this is a win-win for the LPGA and the foreign players. They are going to benefit financially from this, as will the LPGA.
