What is going on between the US and Afghanistan?

Asked by JLeslie (65419points) March 4th, 2020

I know I can google, but I rather hear some jelly answers.

I saw someone from Afghanistan on TV, it might have been the president or a diplomat, talking about what seemed to be some sort of treaty we might be a part of, and he gave mention/respect to US gold star families and veterans who had served in Afghanistan.

What is going on, and what is your take on it?

I don’t know what you saw, but the most recent aspect of our involvement there is a treaty between the US and Taliban.

Over the past eighteen years American military personnel have lost their lives in Afghanistan with no benefit to us at all.
During that time we agreed to train their troops and to back them in achieving a working democracy.
They have shown little interest in either, and haven’t shown notable improvement.
I would be very happy to leave them to their own fate. I don’t believe, however, that a treaty with the Taliban is a solution.

Afghanistan has a long history of wanting help, without reciprocation. Their attempts to work together with proclaimed allies are feeble at best.

I feel like, let Taliban have a go at them. If Taliban takes over Afghanistan, then maybe we could take action, and defeat the whole caboodle together.

I am so sick of hearing about the war in Afghanistan. It isn’t a war. It’s a way of life.

Well, drumpf signed a “peace deal” with the Taliban, which, naturally, was already falling apart mere hours after its signing, as the Taliban resumed their attacks.
The “deal” also included a provision for the Afghan government to release 5000 Taliban prisoners, in return for 1000 of Afghan prisoners, something that the Afghan government did not agree to.

Showing disrespect of someone is rude.
Doing so by intentionally screwing up their name is just childish bullying.

US and others invade Afghanistan because The Taliban won’t extradite Bin Laden and because they provide refuge for Al Qaeda.

Intent is to eliminate Taliban and safe haven for al Qaeda

War drags on -Taliban, aided by Saudi money and Pakistani materiel make a comeback

Other nations lose interest. After Bin Laden killed, US electorate forgets about Al Qaeda and also loses interest.

Obama begins reductions. America haters who think the US is an Imperialistic, war mongering bully praise him for getting the fuck out of The Afghanistan shit hole.

Trump promises to simply get out once and for all. Tries once and Taliban attacks so Trump keeps shooting.

Taliban realizes mistake and negotiates in bad faith. Trump keeps promise to get out and takes the deal.

America haters who think the US is an Imperialistic, war mongering bully mock him for getting the fuck out of The Afghanistan shit hole.

*Post Script- Al Qaeda comes back with Saudi money. Sets off a nuke they get from Pakistan.
Afghanistan invaded.*

Thanks for all the answers so far.

@josie Are you saying your post script happened? Or, you are predicting it will happen.

Post script is what could happen. Admittedly pessimistic.
But
Never underestimate how truly crazy AND stupid The Taliban and Al Qaeda are.
Never underestimate the extent that Saudi money is behind Middle Eastern terrorism.
Currently, Pakistan is the only nuclear country that supports international terrorism so there is your source. Attribution of mass terrorist murder is pretty simple though, and the Pakistanis are not stupid. Arabs on the other hand…

The Taliban are providing aid and comfort to Al Qaeda, the obvious enemy of the United States. And any friend of Al Qaeda is the enemy of the US as well.
