Can someone be tested for COVID-19 immunity?

Asked by JLeslie (65419points) March 13th, 2020 from iPhone

Once this all dies down, will there be a way to do a test for immunity like how we can for Rubella, tetanus and other diseases?

Has there been any new information about developing immunity once infected so you can’t catch it twice?

I don’t find anything about developing immunity from exposure, but the UK is going to test the idea for us.

The government’s Chief Scientific Adviser says they won’t be implementing a drastic shutdown like closing schools and banning large public events.

Financial Times – March 13, 2020 – ’ “Communities will become immune to it and that’s going to be an important part of controlling this longer term,” he said. “About 60 per cent is the sort of figure you need to get herd immunity.”

“In another interview with the BBC Sir Patrick said: “If you suppress something very, very hard, when you release those measures it bounces back and it bounces back at the wrong time.” ’

UPDATE: I see that Financial Times link hits a paywall if you go direct. It seems you can read the story if you google it and click the link.

This addresses the subject from a slightly different angle, but it suggests that there is at least some immunity generated by having had the virus.

Side question since this is in Social:

Can one test for tetanus immunity? I thought you had to keep getting booster shots.

Yes, you can test for tetanus immunity.

If 60% of the population over here contract this stinking virus then we can begin to develop “herd immunity
The operating premise being that this will become a seasonal bug by which time it swings by again, our magical immune system kicks in & renders the virus void.

A hefty price to pay but that’s the way this shit works!
