Star Trek fans: Does anyone remember an episode in the ANIMATED series that was similar, or a spin-off, of the Jack the Ripper / Redjak episode in The Original (Star Trek) Series?

Asked by Yellowdog (12216points) August 25th, 2020

I was alive but too young to watch / follow the original Star Trek series of the 1960s, but became a fan after Star Trek the Animated Series came out in 1973, when I was nine.

As with the original series, I remember a particularly terrifying episode when the Enterprise and all her computer systems became possessed by a demon called Redjak, or Red Jack, who was the same demon who possessed Jack the Ripper in 19th century London. I didn’t see the series from the 1960s until after I had seen the animated one from the 1970s—the one in The Original Series was really scary to me as a ten year old who understood exactly what it was.

But I also remember in the cartoon, or animated, series of the early mid 1970s a similar episode—scary for a while, but the Enterprise crew somehow ended up leaving it in exile on a dead star cinder somewhere out in deep, deep, dark space to wither in isolation.

Although the Redjak episode in the live-action ORIGINAL series is well known, I cannot find the cartoon one. Its as if it doesn’t exist But I know it does, because I saw it before I saw the better-known one. In all lists of the cartoon episodes (“The Animated Series”) I cannot find any episode that even remotely resembles this terrifying cartoon episode.

Can anyone help me pinpoint this?

I’ve seen it, so it’s out there.

Thanks, @kritiper The Amimated series is often disdained because of a couple of dumb plotsbut also had some good storylines— most Trek fans kind of ignore the animated series.

I’m glad to know someone else saw it.
