Well, devoting oneself in a particular field and committing to the rigorous study, education and work in that field is a start.

If you self-title, nothing is required. I know of some people who have legally changed their name to “Lady” so&so , or “Lord”, while others are named “Queen Latifa” or Major Garrett”. One could possibly be named “Prof” or “Master”.You can append letters after your name, such as First Name Last Name, CPI (Certified Paranormal Investigator). You can send money to me for that one, I will certify you. You an send money to various internet sites to issue you an official PhD.
