Are you or someone you know traveling anywhere for Presidents’ Day weekend or week?

Asked by JLeslie (65419points) February 18th, 2022 from iPhone

Presidents’ Day in the US is this coming Monday, February 21, 2022.

I live in Florida, USA, and usually throngs of people come to my state during this weekend.

I’m dreading it. Dreading it mostly because I expect another covid explosion.

If you or someone you know is traveling for the holiday, where are you/they traveling to?

Nope. I hate traveling, never do. Home is where the best things can be found.

Because it tends to coincide with a lot of February vacations for public schools, yes I do.
If you live in a sunny state that has such a huge tourism industry, I guess you can expect that in the winter.
And you probably can, indeed, expect Covid surges because your state is very cavalier about reining in the Covid threats.

I live in NY and I know two people traveling to FL and a family of 4 traveling to California. I live in an affluent school district and if I had to guess, half of the families are traveling somewhere for this coming Winter Break.

@canidmajor and then surge continues north of us when they go back home and infect people up by you. I wish we (the US) had mask protocols for school vacation times in the country.

Maybe the governments will start doing that going forward now that they are relaxing masks overall. Try to hinder the big surges by anticipating the spread instead of reacting to it. I keep hoping for that. At least we still have masks on plane travel and hopefully they still send kids home from school who are sick.

Florida cases go down inbetween the big tourist times even with our lax masking measures, because plenty of residents do still mask indoors or take other precautions. Mostly, I credit the schools for controlling the spread and some counties and businesses still mask a lot indoors.

I was going to make an Osama Airlines joke, but I do not want the SEK kicking down my door.

It’s pretty much meaningless as a travel factor for us. We should be home with the hatches once more battened down by late this afternoon.

@HP You mean regarding covid? It is not meaningless. In my opinion it is the big travel times and masks that have the biggest impacts on cases up or down. If everyone was vaccinated, I think that would have a big impact too, but just dealing with the realty that not everyone is vaccinated, and even the vaccinated can catch it and spread it, the pattern I see is spikes during the times schools are on break and travel is big to my state.

Florida is a major domestic destination, often number one, and as a jelly said above, Florida has very few masking rules. Disney is letting go of their mask rules now, which I dread also.

Right now some Deep South states are already hot with cases per 100,000, and they will be driving down to the panhandle and Disney. I feel very confident the popular panhandle destinations will be really bad per 100,000. We can check it in a week or two. Keep in mind Florida does not count tourists in official numbers, so that will be just residents who caught it from tourists or gave covid to each other.

We don’t have a lot of family left, so we don’t travel a lot. My hubby and I love enjoying being home together and our daughter doesn’t seem to enjoy traveling much more than we do. We stay at home most holidays and enjoy some quality family time together

@Forever_Free send us pictures and bring back shells!

What constitutes as traveling? We are driving down south, but not out of state.

Most everyone I know is traveling this week. But not necessarily out of state. Though some are traveling out of country.

JLeslie's avatar

@raum Leaving home overnight I’d consider traveling. In-state counts. Hell, some of our states are bigger than three countries put together.

@chyna Pictures to prove shared. The shells, sand, tan, and rum are however all mine.
