How long will a tungsten gold plated ring last if I just leave it on a shelf?

Asked by Cindy1302 (806points) August 31st, 2022

I was thinking of buying a tungsten gold plated ring for $117 off of the internet. I read that they can only last a couple years years before the gold plating tarnished. Maybe 5 years. I live in a very humid environment too. I think that would have an effect. The thing is. If it were to only last 2–5 years then if feel like I’m wasting my money. Does anyone here have any gold plated jewelry? How is it holding up?

It’s lovely to think about buying jewelery for yourself. Jewelery is to add beauty to both your outside and to make you feel good about your inside.

I am no expert. It seems that if you buy a ring and never wear it, the gold will never wear off. However, I firmly believe that beauty is meant to be enjoyed fully.

If you’re still working as a cleaner, I think it’s a good idea not to wear it at work to protect it from the chemicals. I suggest you wear it at all other times. I hope it will last many years.

I’ve no personal knowledge of this, but I searched up some articles on the topic, though they were mostly on the sites of sellers of such jewelry.

The consistent message seems to be that not all tungsten rings are made the same way, and the cheaper (industrial grade) ones do tarnish.

Not long if you have children.

Gold will not tarnish. I have several very cheap tungsten rings that sat on a shelf for over a decade and still look new.
