A question about the current Speaker nonsense?

Asked by filmfann (52230points) January 5th, 2023

Commentators on television keep saying that when KM makes deals for support in becoming Speaker, those deals will stand, even if he isn’t elected.
So, if Donalds, say, is elected, he has to keep KM’s back room deals.
Why?

Those deals don’t hold water. All it takes to unravel them is for a presumptive Speaker today, ” I am not beholden to any commitments made by other candidates that would prevent me from leading the Party.”

I suppose it depends what the deal is. If it’s some thing McCarthy can honour without being speaker then I would suspect he would need to honour it else his word wouldn’t be worth jack. But if he needs to be speaker to make good on the offer and not elected then it’s worth nothing.

I think whomever said that is wrong.

It may well be that if a competitor to McCarthy wants to be speaker he might endorse the deals McCarthy made as part of his negotiation…but the deals are just informal agreements until implemented by a speaker and house that is in place and sworn in.

Talking Heads are typically just spewing words. It’s what they do best.

I have heard media commentators and Congressmen (elect) say this.

I think that they are misspeaking!!! IF Marjorie Greene could get her committee assignments back no matter who is Speaker, she’d dump McCarthy like her ex husband!!!

My local news (Canada) said that some Republicans are voting for Trump to be speaker.

It is McCarthy who would have to keep the deals that he made, even if he is not the Speaker.

@RedDeerGuy1 , The Speaker of the House must be a member of the House, which Trump is not.

@LostInParadise, not so, according to what I’ve read in several reliable sources.

This comes from Wikipedia (not authoritative, but convenient): “As the Constitution does not explicitly state that the speaker must be an incumbent member of the House, it is permissible for representatives to vote for someone who is not a member of the House at the time, and non-members have received a few votes in various speaker elections over the past several years.”

The idea of Trump as speaker has been bandied about in various settings for months now.

@RedDeerGuy1 Yes, one Republican nominated Trump. The Republican was Representative Matt Getz (Goetz?). Trump got one vote, from Matt Goetz.

Thanks for the correction
I wonder if it will get to the point that McCarthy supporters will need to threaten to vote for the Democratic leader, Hakeem Jeffries, who only needs nine or ten extra votes.

LostInParadise's avatar

Make that 6 or 7 extra votes. I think he got 212 votes.

@jca2 FYI…He spells it Gaetz.

I just Googled It and Kevin McCarthy was elected speaker.

LadyMarissa's avatar

@RedDeerGuy1… Yes, he was elected at 2:00am EST this morning. Now, he has NO souls left to sell (at least NONE that are his)!!!

McCarthy’s deal making has reduced him to the weakest speaker ever.
