Do you like the smell of weed?

Asked by mazingerz88 (28814points) April 11th, 2023 from iPhone

In several recent months I get to smell marijuana more often than not at bus stops and metro stations. I always find it unappealing. I am wondering if other non-smokers like the smell and also what smokers themselves think about the smell. Thanks.

I always get wafts of it at gigs or concerts.
Not necessarily appealing but It is better than the smell of cigarettes.

gondwanalon's avatar

Stinks! Always hated the stench. Smell like a skunk .
Reminds me of the phony hippies that I had to be around when I was in college in the early 70’s.

omg I love the smell of weed! The buds and leaves have an earthiness that brings to my mind rich soil and wheat fields in the hot sun, and I love the smell of it burning as well. There’s apparently an incense that imitates it, but I’ve never smelled it. Most people that I know don’t like it at all.

Zaku's avatar

No, it almost always smells like roasting dog poop, to me – a smell I very much do not like.

ragingloli's avatar

I do not know what weed smells like.

Acrylic's avatar

No, but I do like the smell of dandelions and the such.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Not at all!!

mazingerz88's avatar

^^Me too. I had a girlfriend who liked the smell of tobacco and I understood somehow. I didn’t mind tobacco smell that much.

KNOWITALL's avatar

Not particularly, no. I like it better than patchouli though.

jca2's avatar

No.

I don’t like the smell of cigarette smoke or weed and I don’t appreciate when people are smoking nearby and my clothes and my hair pick up the smell. I put a lot of effort into smelling nice and smelling like smoke ruins it.

zenvelo's avatar

I am a bit tired of it, when I was in NY last month you could smell it all over the place. And it got old here in California about 7 or 8 years ago. But once in a while it isn’t too bad.

I cannot stand cigarette smoke, I can smell that a block away and it bugs me.

Jons_Blond's avatar

@mazingerz88 I’ve been nicotine free for 20 years and loathe the smell. I’ve never met anyone who likes the smell of cigarettes. You are a first.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Yeah the smell of cigarettes gag me as well, I don’t mind the smell of pipe tobacco once in a while though.

Blackberry's avatar

Yes, I love it.

I’m sure you’d rather smell weed than see drunk people everywhere, though.

If you’re taking the bus, you’re not exactly around the happiest people that have all their needs met, as well.

If I didn’t have a car and had to wake up 2 hours earlier to make up for slow public transportation I’d be high too.

Kardamom's avatar

I think it smells awful.

MrGrimm888's avatar

I do. I love the smell of unsmoked weed more than just about anything.
I know I was a LEO. But. I never had problems with people involving MJ in particular. In fact. When I could smell it in a crowd, it usually meant that there wouldn’t be a violent element.

When I wasn’t a LEO, I enjoyed “weed” regularly. It was a primary reason that the powers that be gave me a specific role when I was first a LEO.

I haven’t smoked, or ate it, in a while. But most of my friends do.

MrGrimm888's avatar

@ragingloli . I’m intrigued. You have never smelled it? I’m not advocating weed, but I can’t think of many places I’ve been in the world where weed wasn’t around…
I have lived in Germany for three years, and traveled to almost every European country. I’ve been around “the islands” (Bahamas, Virgin Islands, etc.)
Parts of Eastern Mexico, like Cozumel, and other east coast Mexican towns, and cities. Some Central American places. And lots of places in the US. “Down South” it’s unavoidable, I would think. People smoke in bars, in traffic, at gas stations, most large gatherings like concerts or other large events like festivals etc. It’s everywhere.
I know that I associate with a “different” crowd than most, but I thought everyone in most of the western world hed been exposed to it…

MrGrimm888's avatar

@KNOWITALL . Love your comment. If you’ve been around them I shouldn’t have to tell you, hippies could smell worse than either.

snowberry's avatar

I don’t like the smell of weed smoke or cigarette smoke, but it’s better than perfume! Perfume, whether the fragrance is an expensive cologne or from your favorite scented floor cleaner are all made from petrochemicals, and they actually make me feel bad. Pot and cigarette smoke doesn’t.

ragingloli's avatar

@MrGrimm888
I usually do not leave the house.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@MrGrimm888 Nope, I’ve smelled plenty who simply don’t believe in most commercial products. I myself use Tom’s all-natural, but never patchouli. Haha!

Dutchess_III's avatar

When I.was in college I was at a friend’s house. There was a cool looking vase on the table next to me. Somebody dropped something in the vase.
Someone commented “Well, we’ll never see that again!”
Smart-ass that I was I simply turned the vase upside down to retrieve it…...it was a bong. I smelled of bong water for a month! IT WAS SO GROSS!!!

smudges's avatar

^^ Too funny! Yeah, bongs don’t smell so nice!

SnipSnip's avatar

I smelled it back in the 70s and it was horrible. I smelled it in the 2000s and it seemed to smell different but equally horrible. I haven’t ever used it or any other altering substance for fun and recreation.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^It’s quality from back then to present day is very different. Even poor quality street stuff is exponentially more potent than almost any stuff from the 70s.

Different types cost different amounts top. The good stuff, is like a masterpiece. Seriously. Most of the expensive stuff has been meticulously developed by mixing different plants and growing processes, to get the amazing stuff available today.

Lots of people smoke vape pens nowadays. It’s more powerful and harder to get caught with…

KNOWITALL's avatar

@SnipSnip Just curious if it’s the stigma or if it’s still illegal in your area or just a personal preference?
It’s legal here for everyone and it’s helping a lot of older folks with pain. My MIL and FIL use tincture as a rub for shoulder pain but won’t smoke it.

raum's avatar

In the air, yes.
On my clothes, no.

Though I think it’s more of an associative like than liking the actual smell?

kritiper's avatar

I prefer to smell it before it is consumed by flame.
(On another note that was alluded to before my entry, I have never roasted dog poop so have no idea what that smells like.)

Brian1946's avatar

@raum

“Though I think it’s more of an associative like than liking the actual smell?”

Same here.
When I smell it, I think “Alright- anonymous fellow partyers!”
But yeah, I don’t see me buying weed-scented deodorant. ;p

NoMore's avatar

No, but I do use in my back yard on occasion. And amazingly the Texas legislation had decimalized use. Not sure yet when it goes into effect so I have to be cautious.

Brian1946's avatar

@raum

Thanks, but my temptation level is currently nada.

No thanks to having armpits with the munchies! ;-0

mazingerz88's avatar

^^Would love to smoke weed with Chambers. But not in that film, her other one.

SnipSnip's avatar

@KNOWITALL I have never wanted to be altered from my sober self. I know and have studied marijuana extensively. I know how dangerous it is, particularly for those with any genetic propensity for psychosis. Legality is not part of my concern about marijuana. And, yes, you’re right about the potency of today’s crop. It’s a different animal from the 70s version.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@SnipSnip Understandable, thanks.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Dangerous? Ok…

SnipSnip's avatar

^^You bet.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@MrGrimm888 It actually can be for some people. Too much and too strong can freak adults out, especially medical strength.

Imagine taking shrooms in chaos with no mentor, similar situation.

Maybe @SnipSnip can share other dangers we may not be aware of.

raum's avatar

@MrGrimm888 If you have a family history of schizophrenia with a specific variant of the AKT1 gene, there’s an increased risk for psychosis.

Though there’s new research that microdosing psilocybin may help schizophrenic symptoms.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Forgive me. I don’t want to derail the thread with what I’m sure is an old debate.
But. I’ll simply say that Marijuana is by far the “safest” of any drug…

SQUEEKY2's avatar

While I don’t smoke it @MrGrimm888 , but going to agree with you ,they use it for glaucoma people and people suffering from cancer .

zenvelo's avatar

My girlfriend’s son had a psychotic episode has first semester a Colorado- Boulder.

It was the first year of of fully open cannabis shops and he had just turned 18. He got some super strong weed and smoked it on top of some edibles. Was hospitalized for a few days, and then had to drop out. Took him about six months to recover to the point of being fully functional.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^First off. Condolences.

Secondly. How would he be, if he smoked opium, and ate a bunch of opiods?
Or. Smoked meth, and snorted coke?

zenvelo's avatar

^^^^ @MrGrimm888 Probably messed up, if he didn’t die. I don’t disagree on the relative safety of marijuana, But it sure is a lot stronger than when we were having bong contests in the 70’s.

MrGrimm888's avatar

That’s my understanding. It still doesn’t make it a dangerous substance.
Not compared to so many things. Acetaminophen, penicillin, certain vaccines, Johnson and Johnson talcum powder, household chemicals, heavy metals, the air in some places, cat poop, sugar, alcohol, cholesterol, Mayonnaise, bacon, donuts, petroleum products, forks, pesticides, antifreeze, sago palms, sodium, etc. It’s just really overblown, as far as something that should be worried about… It really is. That wouldn’t matter to me, if there weren’t so many people who’s lives were ruined because of nonsensical drug laws.

Russia was going to put Grinner in a prison camp, for paraphernalia, for fuck’s sake…

Forever_Free's avatar

The age old debate arises. I think the proof is the legalization of medical use in 38 states and recreational use in 21 states a foundation for it’s safety when used properly.
The argument is likened to Alcohol consumption. Some people should stay away from it and others should use it in proper moderation.
Same principal for eating improperly or becoming dependent on medication or OTC products.
Some people have no control or common sense and it flows over into that it’s bad and everyone should be banned from its use.
Let’s outlaw Ice cream, butter or McDonalds because people are eating way to much of it and causing medical issues.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^I can’t think of a more succinct way to articulate it. GA.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

I don’t understand why this question is getting so many answers?

smudges's avatar

^^ At least in part because it has evolved into a debate about the pros and cons of pot. Other than that, many people have opinions regarding the smell.
