Some progress is better than no progress. What's your milestone?

Asked by canidmajor (21236points) August 20th, 2023

I haven’t seen one of these in a while, so I thought I’d revisit.
Basically, what are you working on that you achieved any headway on? One more row in that sweater you’ve been knitting for three years? The addition you are building onto your house? Getting through your child’s terrible twos (or terrible teens)? Planning for the Trip Of A Lifetime? Recovery from an accident or illness?

Pretty much anything that is ongoing for you, big or small, that you might like to mention.

I’ll go first. This summer after a few years of emotional strife (pandemic, scare of cancer recurrence, death of my mother and the attendant Awful Family Crap) I am attacking overgrowth and mess in my yard with a vengeance and some nifty devices that destroy stuff in a very satisfactory manner. I am making progress, and the release of frustration and anger while doing so is very gratifying.

I made back what I paid for my Senior season’s badge today with my second trip to the city beach!

(I remember this being a thread that Jeruba started and kept going for several iterations.)

I have been working on getting my body and breathing into shape. I wear a Garmin fitness watch every day. (Actually, I am wearing 2 . But, since I don’t want you to think I am crazy, I said “a Garmin Fitness watch”.)
Anyway, I can monitor my slow progress by looking at my VO2Max reading. When I started I was in the Fair range for someone my age. After a lot of running, weights etc, I am now in the Excellent range for my age and Very Good range for someone 17 year younger. I intend to keep working on it until I am Very Good for someone 2 decades younger.

We are in the early stages of planning a trip to Europe with friends.

I took my grandson to the park for the first time a couple of days ago. It was just the two of us. He is just beginning the “terrible twos” but it seemed we got on very well together.

<sigh> I got another box unpacked a couple of days ago. 17 more to go. It’s embarrassing to admit, but I moved here 2½ years ago after a fire in my apt building, and I’m still not unpacked and furniture is still willy nilly. My back gives me so much grief that I can only be upright (standing or moving) for 10–15 mins, depending on how bad it is that day. So yeah, there’s been a lot of days that nothing has been done. I have a Community Support Worker who encourages me and helps when she can, like moving a box to within arm’s reach so I can sit and unpack it. I don’t know what I’m going to do…I’ve had shots, a laminectomy, physical therapy, and am currently in aquatherapy. There’s more shots in a different place that I can try, and a different surgery, but really…what can be done when it’s arthritis? They can’t just cut some of it out because that would destabilize the spine. My doc and I have discussed ablating some nerve endings in the facet joint which could help and could conceivably last a few months, which would be wonderful! We’ll see.

sorry, long answer to a short question!

Aw, @smudges, I am so sorry you are having those back issues! About the boxes? Don’t stress yourself. As we get older, the boxes breed and there are always more. During the pandemic I found a couple of boxes from my Seattle house. I left Seattle in 1994!! <3

@smudges Hugs don’t help but have some anyway.

@canidmajor & @janbb Thank you for your positive thoughts. They don’t help my back but they definitely help how I feel. Wow…1994! That’s like finding a time capsule! ;)

Learned recent new techniques in astroimaging that have markedly improved what I’m able to do. I’d write details but your eyes would glaze over.

I can’t think of one thing! This is part of my problem right now. Not much to look forward to. Not moving forward on things that need to be done. Maybe this Q will give me a push.

@JLeslie Good luck! I hate that feeling of being in stasis. Ugh.

smudges's avatar

@JLeslie I understand the feeling. It’s been an issue with me for several years. I hope this question does help. One thing I’ve done in the past is ask myself, “Ok, if there were no barriers like money or physical problems, what would I like to do?” The list is usually things that aren’t possible, like riding a bike, but then I begin thinking, “Ok, I can’t do X, but maybe I could do Y, and then maybe I’ll be able to do X eventually”. That’s one of my goals…to ride a bicycle. I think at least one of the things that prevents it is fear.

Maybe you can work out a list of things you want to do, rather than things that _have to be done. Luck to you! p.s. I’m not trying to solve your problem, just saying I understand and saying what helped me.
