Does anyone have any tips for buying/setting up a cheap surround sound system?

Asked by arcoarena (692points) September 29th, 2008

I am by no means a audio-tech but I know a few basics about amps and speakers. I’ve checked at some good-wills and what not but not found anything really worth buying. I picked up 2 speakers for cheap that need to be plugged in to a power amp that I do not yet own.

I do not care if the equipment is used and quality is not of major importance to me, just that it works correctly.

So if anyone has any tips for where I can get a used or new, but cheap, system that I can hook up to my tv let me know!

Any other tips or recommendations about setting up a surround sound system is greatly welcomed as well!

Take into account, the size of the room you will be setting this up in. If it’s a decent sized living room, the standard 5.1 surround sound (2 front left/right speakers, center speaker, 2 rear left/right speakers & a sub). If you plan to set this up in a bedroom, or small gameroom type of area, then you wont need so much. Simple 2 front left/right, center & maybe a sub, will provide good enough sound, as the room would help amp up the acoustics & give a surround feel to sound.
