Distilling water is a simple process. The water is boiled; the steam is collected and cooled, which causes the steam to condense back into liquid water, minus the impurities.

Doing this at home would require that you devise some way to funnel the steam into a long coil of tubing, and that you come up with a way to cool the steam as it travels through the tube. The distilled water will drip out the other end.
