Why is formating showing up in Safari suddenly?

Asked by jtvoar16 (2171points) October 25th, 2008

So, I just realized that Formating (as in formal formating, like the little symbol to represent “paragraph” not like HTML or something) is showing up all over the place in Safari. It wasn’t doing it an hour ago, now suddenly it feels necessary to show my were ever space is and every place the developer of any website, hit “return.”
I must say it is a surreal thing to experience, but now the novelty is gone.
How do I make this stuff go away, and why did it just show up? Could it be a virus and\or spy-wear? (I was just surfing some website of ill repute, [Not porn but hacker’s sites])
and if it is spywear… WTH?!?!?! I mean, besides the fact that I am used to seeing this formating in my writing, is this supposed to be “destructive?” Cause if it is, I would mark it as a FAIL.

@andrew I don’t think he’s talking about the nifty new permalink feature, sounds like the marks are popping up on ALL websites, in all paragraph breaks.

Been doing some searching and scouring through all of Safari’s settings, but haven’t found anything yet. Just for starters, I would make sure the text encoding is set to default (View -> Text Encoding -> Default).

I’ll see if I can think of anything else in the meantime.

For me I see them in Firefox while hovering over the name, “Great Answer” “Flag as…” ¶. <—There it is when I copied those lines. CSS hover is making it appear for me.

Do you also see it in other browsers? (i.e. check whether the problem lies in Safari – though it probably is)

Then I’d go rummagging through Safari’s preferences – is there something like about:config in Safari? ;-)

Yeah, I see them in Safari, iCab, and Camino. I’m on an intel Macbook Pro running Tiger.

@forestGeek – sorry, I was speaking to jtvoar. You’re supposed to see those things under answers in Fluther ;-)

@Vincentt – I know the links should be there, I’m saying I can see the paragraph markers (¶) also. I see it only when I hover over those links under each post. Just started seeing them a few days ago. They don’t bother me, but I see them too.

@forestGeek – yeah, that’s supposed to happen. It’s not what jtvoar16 was talking about though – it shows up at other (“hacker”) websites for him.

Oops, sorry, my bad! :)

Well, I don’t know what it was, but the marks are gone now, I just had to reboot. I’m not sure why it happened, and if it ever happens again, I’ll be sure to repost, thanks for all the info!
