What is considered to be THE most effective email obfuscating method?

Asked by makemo (531points) October 27th, 2008

I’d like to know, which method(s) are to be considered the best in show, in the professional web development community, for email obfuscation on websites.

I prefer any other methods than using image files, typing quirky rebuses, or using captchas to retrieve my contact info.

I’ve been trying to google this, but there is just too much written on this topic, for me to be able to make an educated opinion on which is the best, tried-and-tested-over-time method.

I don’t know how much email harvesting techniques have improved since this article was written, but I’ve always used this technique for major projects, and it seems pretty effective if a little complex when initially setting it up.

I like the CSS backward text hack. Simple and effective. Google it.

The Javascript advocated in the A List Apart article apilofu linked to is very nicely automated by Dan B. on his site with a tool called Enkoder

Just enter an e-mail and it spits out Javascript you can paste instead. The Javascript will encrypt the e-mail but will be plainly viewable to human viewers. A beautifully simply web form will do this for you or he’s even made a Mac app that will do the same.

@syz

Grammatically, should it be obfuscation, or just obfuscate within the context of my question? I don’t speak english by mother tongue, so I’d be interested to know if I got it wrong or nay.

Obfuscate is a verb. Your sentence was correct. If you were to change obfuscating with another word, “blocking” for example, the sentence would make sense as well. “What is considered to be THE most effective email blocking method?”

It would be more clear to say, “What is the most effective way to block e-mail?” Or, “What is the most effective way to obfuscate e-mail?”

There are other ways to phrase your sentence as well, but I hope you get the idea.

Blessings!
