What are the possible sign of getting fired?

Asked by mea05key (1812points) November 12th, 2008

The economy is bad and the company is not doing well either. I am new just joinned them last month and there are chances that they might be downsizing. They will probably fire me since i am less valuable and probably because i am an asian also. Should i talk to my boss about this? Or should i forget about everything and move on? Or start applying other jobs now? Advice needed . thank you !

I wish you the best. If it were me, I think I’d ask the boss, but I don’t know if it the wisest thing to do.

You may want to consider speaking candidly with your boss, and in a way that’s non-confrontational. You could say something general like:

“I know the economy is in bad shape, and I’m starting to hear rumors about layoffs. Is there anything you can share with me?”

As for the fact that you’re Asian, I’m not sure why that would be relevant?

Do not ask your boss about the financial well being of the company or potential layoffs. They won’t share that with you anyway. My best advice is to ask your boss what you can do to improve your work right now. Think up some new and innovative ideas to improve things around the workplace. Improve morale, improve business processes, ideas for expanding what your company does. You don’t necessarily have to implement the ideas, just put them to paper and share them with management. Overall, make yourself a loss to the company if you are laid off. Move yourself up the food chain so to speak. How long you have been there really shouldn’t matter to a competent manager, what you can provide in the future should be far more relevant.

And if you are fired for being Asian, then you won’t need to worry about working as your discrimination lawsuit should set you up for quite a while. :)

Don’t assume anything at this point. When a company downsizes, they tend to target the older, more established employees first. These are the people with the higher salaries. Most often, they’ll offer incentives for these people to leave voluntarily. Then, they’ll start looking for dead wood. Companies are smarter that way than they were once.

This doesn’t mean you should breathe easy. Nobody is doing that right now. Keep your resume current, of course, but do your job with as much enthusiasm as you can muster.

I would do as good a job as you can. If they just hired you, they must have wanted you. Things haven’t changed that much in a month—it’s been bad for a while. So, assume the best—and then wait and see.

C’mon now. I find it hard to belive the fact that you are Asian has anything to do with the possibility of you being fired. Being late in the midst of potential downsizing would be a more realistic approach.

if you have that “feeling,” then by all means start applying elsewhere.
possible signs:
1. you see people in the office who “just want to look around and survey”
2. the company is updating employee key-entry cards and the security system
3. nobody is talking to you
4. you can’t understand why your desk is moved from one place to another
5. your work hours are changed
6. they stopped calling on you to do overtime
7. they let somebody go about a week ago
8. the office is operating as if events will occur in the future as usual
9. you work all day, but there’s a meeting with the boss at 4 p.m.
10. the meeting is in some other office with your boss and two more people you have never met before.

Possible sign:

They move your desk into a storage room and take away your red stapler.
