Quicksilver vs Butler, which one and why?

Asked by Bri_L (12219points) November 12th, 2008

I use Butler. The reason is I figured it out easier. And for some reason, I got the impression when I started it was free and Quicksilver wasn’t. What are your impressions of them if you use them. I know I can’t go back to not using one or the other. I access everything with 3 keystrokes now.

I find Butler infinitely more confusing than Quicksilver. Though there was a time when I used them in tandem for different respective purposes—I love Butler’s ability to make custom menulets.

Quicksilver is the best one here, but i prefer spotlight.

@wilhel1812 – could you explain your answer for me? and how spotlight works in that capacity? please?

Well, i have tried all of them, i like quicksilver over butler. Butler was really confusing. However quicksilver didn’t give me any features (that i need) that spotlight couldn’t provide me. Especially now in leopard, where my applications turn up way faster than other stuff and the ability to press enter to launch.

I had no idea spotlight worked that way. I hated spotlight as a search engine. I took forever and never found a damn thing but I just tried what you said and it worked great.

I shall have to rethink my approach.

Tried both, love neither.

Quicksilver was fine, but didn’t offer anything extra I couldn’t already do with OSX.

Butler had extra features, but way way way too much configuration required to get it working to your workflow.

All in all, I heart spotlight. <3
I don’t even use the dock anymore. My entire mac experience is a combination of Cmd+Space, Cmd+Tab, F8, F9 and F11.
(Spotlight, change application, spaces, exposé and reveal desktop, in that order).

@chromaBYTE – is there a way to teach spotlight? For instance in Butler I can teach it that “dc” is “disc Catalog” where as “d” is “dictionary”.
