Do you think that two fraternal twins of the same gender could look so much a like that they are taken for monozygotic twins?

Asked by monsoon (2528points) November 14th, 2008

I was just watching an interview with Tegan Quin from the band Tegan and Sara, who are identical twins, and when the announcer commented on how she couldn’t tell them apart, tegan said that she wasn’t completely convinced that they were identical twins at all. I thought she posed a good point, their faces are shaped completely differently, and their voices sound very distinct from one another.

After a moment I realized what she was getting at was that they could just be fraternal same-sex twins who happen to look very much alike. Do you think that would be possible?

It’s possible, I guess, because regular old siblings can look very similar – and that’s what these are. The difference is that the fraternal twins would also be the same age, which can help similar looking twins look even moreso.

The Olsen Twins are actually fraternal. Who knew?!

So are the Sprouse Twins
On the left is a picture of them when they where around 6, on the right is a picture of them at 14 or 15. Now that they are 16, you can clearly tell them apart, both having different body shapes, voices, personalities, ect…
They milked the whole “Identical Twins” thing as long as they could.
So i guess to answer your question: Yes, yes they can.
I personally don’t know anyone in real life, any longer (I did have a friend who had a friend that had “Identical Paternal Twins.” One being a year older then the other. I suppose the two boys are completely different now, considering that was like ten years ago.)

Fraternal twins are just siblings that happened to be born during the same pregnancy. They are no different than any other siblings. They can and do look as alike or different as any other siblings. As similarly as you can imagine any other siblings to look, is as similar as fraternal twins can look.

I have fraternal twin boys who(I’m told) look identical. I see lots of differences, but I’m their mom.

Chimp-faced girls.

Got to say though, it’s been a huge improvement.
They used to scare me back in their Full House days.

psst! that’s cause they both have fake noses. that are only seven years old. :)

Actually, by the first picture you linked, they look alright.
It’s more when they were really young.

I think it’s because their heads caught up with the size of their eyes.
And those crazy bags under their eyes went away.

Or maybe I just find child celebrities—in general—creepy?

There ain’t no way a button nose goes pointy. Ain’t no way.

No. Yeah, creepy.

I think anorexia would make most any nose pointy, no?

Haha…you’re giving me flashbacks to the 80s (or early 90s) with that one.

No, but if you humm a few bars I’ll fake it.

I went to middle school with twins that looked identical but were actually fraternal. After about a semester, I could tell who I was looking at instantly, but a lot of people I know still can’t.
