How to tell if something is fake on ebay?

Asked by jtvoar16 (2171points) November 14th, 2008

I want to purchase a new iphone screen and digitizer, however I know a lot of people like to run scams on ebay with things like this. I am wondering how I can tell if it is fake or not.
I have never personally shopped on ebay before and have no idea what to expect. I would like to believe ebay has some way of filtering out the riff-raff, but I know this isn’t a perfect world… (If it were, my iPhone would be indestructible!)

Look at the seller’s rating and history. If he/she has sold a lot of items in the past, and has a good rating and good comments, it’s probably a safe bet to purchase from them.

what if they are a new customer? he has only had an account since Aug, it appears he has some way of getting a lot of stuff for the iPhone, like parts and pieces.

iPhone parts and pieces? Fake. iPhone accessories? Potentially real. If it’s over ten dollars, has flashy colors and neon anywhere, I will not buy it unless they have an ungodly amount of feedback.

so I really can’t trust parts? a lot of people here on fluther say they buy their parts for their phones off of ebay… but no one has responded with any of my privet comments yet to get their input.
When I search for the action on my mom’s iphone, it doesn’t come up until I type in the action number, then the phone says that “buy it now items aren’t supported.” which makes me leery, but in general, buying anything online that isn’t paintballs or video games, makes me leery.

What parts? Haha, accessories are not parts, and the iPhone is kind of sealed up, so unless you’re looking to open it up arts aren’t iwhat you’re looking for.
