How to aide a sty?

Asked by krose1223 (3269points) November 22nd, 2008

I have heard that applying a hot washcloth to a sty will help it go away faster, which seems to have worked in the past. I have also heard that pulling the eyelash where it is risen from will make it go away. Are these true?

I wouldn’t pull your eyelash, that must hurt like hell. But definitely try to warm washcloth. It will be soothing and increase blood flow to the area, which will help it heal faster. I had a friend who got them before, they look like they suck. But she always did the washcloth thing, no harm and it cleared up relatively quickly.

Have’nt had one in awhile, but i used to wash it with soap and let the warm water (from the faucet) run over it for about two
minutes. Next, I would let cold water run on it for about two
minutes. These seemed to throw it for a loop and make it go
away faster.

I get them all the time. Hot compresses (10 minutes/ 4 or 5 times a day), gentle washing with baby shampoo (won’t sting) and pulling at nothing. You want to get the pus from the little infection to come to a head and then discharge..Don’t go poking with fingers and wash hands a lot.

Excellent and medically-sound answers here. http://www.fluther.com/disc/3191/what-is-best-way-to-get-rid-of-a-stye-under/

I had them often as a teen. Washing pus away with baby shampoo is the best. Cool compresses for swelling and irritation. Washing hands often is key. My grandmother used to say that if you rubbed the tail of a black cat along your lashes, it would go away. Strangely it worked. It’s an old wife’s tale.

Yep, the stuff you said is exactly what I do. Tweeze the lash out of the infected sebaceous gland and then apply hot compresses. And don’t poke at it. And if it STILL doesn’t go away, go to a doctor and they’ll lance it.
