Who, besides me, saw the sliver moon, Venus (reddish)and Jupiter between 6:00 & 7:00PM EST?

Asked by gailcalled (54644points) December 1st, 2008

A rare and easily spotted brilliant triangle, setting in the SW. The cloud cover blew away just in time. Gorgeous.

Glad you got your chance!

Tonight, they switched sides when I looked just now – a sad face :(

Those heavenly bodies do have the annoying habit of moving, don’t they? But it was a wonderful hour. I called everyone I knew and sent them to the window or outside. (Tilt your screen to the right a little.) ) :

I happened to look up and was taken breathless by the sight. I knew at once what it was, thanks to you, Gail.

Durn clouds.

@Brian; I am delighted that you could see it in spite of the city lights. I got a call from a friend living in a high rise on E 86th St. He had a view to the south and also saw it.

Del; a great pity.

It was a thrill!

@Maude: It was sure bright. The city lights didn’t interfere. I saw it over Seventh Avenue looking south.

I saw it here in CA too! It was striking. Memorable. I figured they must be planets but didn’t know which ones. And I call myself a 3rd grade teacher. :-)

It was so beautiful. Happy to say my 3 daughters and I just happened to be outside at the right time. We had no idea it was going to be there at all, and at first mistook the planets for planes. When they never moved, we figured it was something extra-ordinary. My husband provided the answer when I got home.

We saw it – amazing. I am so glad I had to pick up my husband at work. A friend of mine posted on his facebook page, that it won’t happen until 2052(?) (I am not sure about that last number). I suspect gailcalled is correct…

We won’t see it tonight again???!! :~/

gailcalled's avatar

@Everyone; Look again tonight at about the same time and note how their relative positions have changed. Now think about the geometry of the moon orbiting the earth c. once every 28 days; Venus orbits the sun inside the earth’s orbit and Jupiter outside (and a long way away.) Expect pop quiz, or not.

Click on the image of the sun and watch the planets in their paths. Then click on the various planets and other objects for more details. And here’s the monthly lunar orbit.

A wonderful project for third graders (and older) is to watch the changing location, rising and setting, and shape of the moon during a course of a month.

I couldn’t see it. the sky was to cloudy. :(

It’s all still up there, in between the cloud cover tonight, Dec. 2. The configuration is slightly different; the moon is slightly thicker and further away from the planets to its south…still a very nice sight.

Bummer, the trees are blocking venus and jupiter – (juniper)

@Dandy; Get into your car and drive somewhere dark. It is worth the effort. G
