GPS Tracking in realtime?

Asked by aanuszek1 (2290points) December 6th, 2008

Is it possible to track the location of a Magellan eXplorist 210 in real time without it being connected to the computer? I tried it with Google Earth Plus, but it appears it has to be connected to the computer to track it. Is there any other porgram that will allow me to track its location in realtime?

From what I’ve seen so far, typical gps devices don’t have any hardware that could communicate their location to your computer.

All it has is a gps receiver, which means that by receiving signals from gps satellites, it can figure out where in the world it is very precisely. It then uses built-in map software and maps loaded onto it to display the surrounding area.

The only way for that information to get to your computer is to connect them with a cable. Or to get a device that does have ways of communicating its location to the outside world.

Here’s an example of a device that has cellular hardware built in, so you can track its location from anywhere. In this case, to keep an eye on your pet. http://www.zoombak.com/products/pet/
