Can you remember what certain food taste like?

Asked by tekn0lust (1868points) December 17th, 2008

Ok I know this is an odd question, but hear me out.

A friend and I were discussing our body weight and it occurred to me that I cannot remember what foods taste like. I simply remember that I like or dislike something. She says that she can remember specific elements after eating something and that it leads to cravings.

So do you remember details of your favorite foods or do you simply remember that you like something?

I remember the taste and smell. Right now I’m imagining a steak and I know everything about it!

I actually remember what my food taste like exactly! I went through this phase where I only wanted to drink stuff because I got tired of eating and I felt I had tasted everything that was available to me.

I still do this at times when I declare I need to cut back on food, I’ll immediately start wanting things that I don’t need so instead I imagine it vividly and in my mind I can actually taste it. its weird but it works because I have my favourite tastes without the calories.

Mostly, sometimes I can’t get it entirely.

I mainly remember the look and perhaps the smell if the smell is distinct. Like white castle burgers have a very distinct smell to them. If something is seasoned I can then imagine the taste otherwise if it’s a bland taste I often don’t remember that.

tinyvamp That really can’t be good for your health. You need the nutrients from food. You can’t JUST drink.

@hypeserver: even though it was a phase, i’ve actually been put on liquid diets before. the liquid contents include all the daily nutrients i need. but mind you the times when i went through my liquids phase (just because i was bored with food) it only lasted for a few days and i’d have something plain like rice on and off again.

tinyvamp I understand going on liquid diets. By “liquids phase” I was assuming you meant just drinking liquids such as water and not meaning a liquid diet.

@hypeserver: oh no! haha, i’m sorry. i’d drink a variety of things—smoothies, coffee, lots of water, etc.

tinyvamp Smooties are good since they do have some nutrients in them and water is obviously good as well, but when you are just drinking liquids NEVER drink coffee or drinks with caffeine in them. These drinks not only ruin your stomach lining, but are extremely bad for you when you’ve had nothing to eat with them. Not to mention that you can become addicted to caffeine a lot easier if you’re not eating any food with the caffeine. When you’re eating the caffeine breaks down with the food you eat and has some energy left in the body. When you’re just drinking the body doesn’t break down any of that energy from the caffeine and it becomes hazardous to your health.

I can remember most foods, but not all. I guess the difference is due to regularity. If I only have something once a year, it’s harder to recreate that taste sensation.

If you can’t remember what food taste like you might need to see a neurologist or a psychiatrist.

hypeserver's avatar

steve6 That sounds pretty drastic for not remembering what a food tastes like. I remember a lot of things, but I don’t really care if I remember what in the world a certain food tastes like. As long as I can remember everyone’s birthdate, my dad, and great memories I’ll be happy. Until the day that I forgot those things I will never see a neurologist or a psychiatrist due to my memory.

I can taste things in my head. I can figure out if a new combination of tastes will work without even trying them. It’s just a matter of experience, I think.

I, too, taste things in my head. When I put food together in a dish, I can imagine how they will taste in a blend, and make decisions based on that knowledge.

I think my spouse is more like the question asker. It drives me nuts. All foods that he likes seem equally likeable, giving me nothing special to shoot for in the kitchen, outside of pleasing myself. He says he can’t imagine food tastes in the same way as I can, which leads to some funny kitchen output when he cooks.

He’s better if he sticks to a recipe. I’m better when I wing it.

Damnit. You all are very lucky. I have spent all day trying to remember what an Oreo tastes like. I know I like them and can eat a whole bag but man I’d sure like to remember what they taste like.

I must be broken.

Hell, if that’s all that’s wrong with you, count your blessings! Probably staves off unhealthy cravings : )

augustlan Not at all my friend. Not at all.
