HELP!! My music files keep disappearing!

I have iTunes 8 and I store my music files on an external harddrive, and minutes after I upload my music into iTunes, random files disappear! I had one cd completely vanish except for one song. And I don’t mean they are being renamed or reorganized..they are wiped away, gone, off the harddrive completely!! Can anyone tell me what is going on??????

I consolidated and it didn’t change anything. :( All it did was copy the songs that were already in the iTunes folder into the iTunes folder?? Which was weird… and if it helps, the songs that have disappeared are all downloads. Please help!!!
