IE won't work.

Asked by derektherock42 (201points) December 24th, 2008 from iPhone

On my grandmas computer, IE doesn’t display the web at all. It stops responding, and it closes. System restore doesn’t work. I have an Internet connection, just no browser.

Good. Get Mozilla FireFox. It’s a much safer, secure, and faster browser, especially for grandmas.

Try Firefox. IE is a ridiculously bad browser.

Yes, I understand firefox is better. I myself use it and Safari, and I hate IE too. But my grandma doesn’t want it because she hates change, and besides, how am I supposed to install it without access to the Internet? Try to think through this a little better next time.

Wow, that was rude. You can download the installer to a USB pen from another computer and install it from there.

Tell your grandma it’s the only option and that there’s nothing else; say it’s the “upgraded version”. She’ll get used to it, it’s not that different. I did exactly the same thing with my parents and they got used to it in about a day.

Internet Explorer is heavily integrated into the OS, so troubleshooting it can be a real headache. In a lot of cases it’s easier to simply reinstall the OS. In your case, it sounds like installing an alternative browser is the easiest and smartest thing to do.

Good luck.

Derek, load Firefox on a USB drive, and plug it into your grandmother’s computer. Install adblock and WOT, and let Firefox’s built-in phishing filter handle the rest.

And a simple click on richardhenry’s username can show you his credentials. He clearly knows what he’s talking about. When an expert offers help, don’t be nasty.

Sorry I was rude, I’m kind of having a rough Xmas. Thanks for letting me know about putting the installer on a flash drive. Grandma still wants IE, which is beyond me since it’ll cost money to repair, and firefox is free. Anyway thanks.

If she’s really set on IE, you could try downloading the installer and repairing it. Good luck.

My mother was really set on IE too, but when I reminded her that IE (compared to Firefox) is more vulnerable to virii, trojans, and other nasties…so her computer could get infected with keyloggers, she’d have her ID stolen and bye-bye to all that hard-earned money in her bank account!

Soo…she switched to Firefox and also updates her virus protection program more regularly than before. :)

I got IE to work. Thanks anyway. I’ll try to give her firefox some other time. Thanks

Maybe farther down the line when you switch her to firefox, you can use an IE theme and change the icons. She’ll never know the difference :)
