Hypercam is what I use, and it works great! Plus, you can’t beat free!

and what do i do to say record my xbox 360, ive used hypercam for my laptop

Ah, for that you would need to purchase a tuner card for your PC. You would need to make sure it has the proper inputs for your gaming console. My Recommendation

well my dad said you could use say a recording devise like you would use to record a tv show and just use it to record your xbox screen, is that possible?

A device like a DVR box would not work because most of them not only record through coaxial input, and they are encrypted and do not let you transfer recorded content to your PC. Theoretically, you could connect the output of your gaming console to the input of a VCR, and then run the output of the VCR back to your TV, but recording onto a tape isn’t doing you much good.

ok could you use a webcam for an xbox 360 (the type you buy for an xbox)

No, that is not what a webcam does.
