So tired its painful...sitting at work, what do you do?

Asked by johnny0313x (1855points) January 7th, 2009

So I fell asleep last night at 1 and woke up at 8AM this morning. This is a very early night for me BTW – however I am exhausted, i mean im sitting here yawning my head off and to be honest I almost feel like this is painful. My eyes feel heavy, my body is “slouchy?” and I really just want to lay down and sleep. I don’t like coffee or have any available, however I do have some mountain dew next to me which i am sure will not do a whole lot. What do you do when you feel like this? Surprisingly though I feel rather alert when it comes to understanding things, but slow in response lol

If you’re used to getting less sleep you probably just tricked your body into thinking it was time to make up your sleep debt. So now, it’s in coma mode. Drink the Mountain Dew, take a power nap on your break and walk around once an hour. That will keep you up. :)

Get up and go for a brisk walk. Indoors if you need to, but outdoors is best. If it’s cold or snowy, even better, the chilliness will wake you up. A 10 minute walk will get your blood flowing nicely.

@johnny0313x: That does suck. I have been there many times.

I’ll eat at my desk and when I go to lunch, take a power nap in my car (while listening to classical music on headphones). Just make sure you have someone call you to wake you up. I’ve forgotten that detail and awoken three hours later.

I drink Coca Cola and Mountain Dew. Like everything else Mountain Dew and soft drinks can be addictive and you can gain a lot of weight if you have them regularly but it works for me.

Suck it up friend. 12 hours of work with 7 hours of sleep? You should just be happy your still working and have a place to sleep. Try streching? Loosen your shoe laces and belt, focus on your breathing. Hold the tip of your tounge to the roof of your mouth. Drink lots of water if you are just sitting.

I work in data entry, and it’s really, really boring. I’d like to do the power nap or get up and walk around the building or something, but I am timed and my pay is directly related to how much data I enter per hour.

So, I came up with a regimen of sorts. I keep tea at my desk. I can get up and refill my tea, and often that little bit of a walk helps. I also keep caffeine mints there, and I’ll pop one (or four) for the flavor and for the caffeine. But the best trick I’ve found is to have some peppermint essential oil. If I put a tiny bit at the tip of each nostril, it really makes me a lot more alert – at least for a little while. Repeat as needed.
