In watching the movie I Am Legend, did it evoke memories of feeling similarly isolated and/or lonely?

Asked by Siren (3419points) January 8th, 2009

One big theme of the film was portraying how an individual copes with complete isolation and loneliness. I could relate to some aspects of that occasionally during periods of my life. I would like to read other people’s comments on whether they similarly could relate to the movie’s theme, and people’s general comments on how the movie portrayed that aspect of our lives for some of us.

I think sometimes feel that alone, even when they are surrounded by others. You feel like no one understands, you are utterly alone. Everyone thinks their situation is unique but the funny thing is it happens to most of us at one time or another.

I have been very alone recently, but the movie that came to mind was “castaway”, because I felt that I needed the strength and perseverence Tom Hanks had in that film. I also kept some things (like Hanks did with that one package that he delivered in the end) to remind me of my goal.

What touched me most in “I am Legend” was that the girl’s name was Marilou (right?), and she was obviously black. My daughter’s best friend has the same name and is also black and of the same age as that girl. And because of some family problems there was this period where I had more or less taken her in (she spent a lot of time at our place basically). So I felt attached to that character a lot, and the loss of that little girl in the film touched me a lot.

Other than that I saw it as a futuristic dystopian action-movie

@Jack: cool answer. I also thought of the film castaway when writing this question. I wonder if those two actors will ever work together…or have they already?

I don’t think they’ve even met. You see even though their age difference is not that big, they belong to different generations. When Tom Hanks was in his heyday, Smith was still the prince of Bel Air, and by the time he started starring in proper films, Hanks had already moved into production. I cannot imagine any genre that could cast them together, though of course anything is possible.

I am lonely too much. I absolutely loved this movie because he wasn’t the only one. I give this movie 5 stars.

@90s_kid: Sorry to hear how lonely you are. I have similarly had periods, as recently as last year, where I felt acute loneliness. I think that’s why I appreciated aspects of that movie, though it was fiction.

I was in isolation, in the hospital while going through issues with leukemia. Make no mistake, after spending time alone, especially when you are very used to be around people, it’s difficult. It changed my sleep patterns, I got depressed and truly craved any contact…the poor people that came in to do my meds…they never got free! It’s hard.

I was just in hospital for a day with a broken arm and it drove me crazy…I think the worst part is that you can’t even move so there are very few things you can do and time passes very slowly. Even health issues aside, I’d say hospital time is even worse than jail time. Plus you don’t even know when you’re getting out, or in what condition.

@Cak and Jack: I had no idea hospitals could be so isolating!

@johnny: Sorry about the loneliness. For me, I started calling up family and old friends, but if that’s not an option I suggest just going out and making new ones, if you have the time/resources. You sound like a pretty social person so you probably need to connect with people. There are other personality types who actually thrive on being alone, even though they are not always alone (i.e. people in science fields, etc.).

@Siren – My family and friends coudn’t visit and nurses and doctors didn’t linger. However, I could manage a fierce conversation with myself. It’s very difficult, it quickly reminds you to not take people for granted!

Siren's avatar

@cak: yowsers! I hope the fierce conversations were non-violent. jk

Seriously, I have caught myself talking to myself also, when I was getting pretty lonely. Unfortunately, I found it rather amusing, so didn’t realize it was a bad sign.

cak's avatar

@Siren – Hey…the doctors joked with me, if I had to introduce myself to the voice answering me, then I had problems. ;) It’s hard to argue with yourself, but hey, you always laugh at your own jokes.

Siren's avatar

So true Cak, so true. You know, sometimes I have that inner comic who cracks a joke inside my head, and I can’t help laughing out loud. Does that make me crazy, or just funny? both?

cak's avatar

Crap…it might make us both crazy; however, I’ll go with perfectly sane!

Siren's avatar

I like your style, Cak. I too will diagnose me sane ;)

cak's avatar

Thus, a happy ending to a potentially confusing situation. (Cost less money, too…medical issues really cost a lot of money!)

Jack79's avatar

Siren, why do you have two accounts? And why are you having a conversation with your alternate account?

don’t worry guys, lot’s of people talk to themselves….it’s the answering back that should worry you

Siren's avatar

@Jack: Huh?? I have one account, not two. That’s all me up above. I’m conversing with Johnny and Cak and 90s_Kid. Now you.

I hope I don’t have a twin on this site. i want to be unique!

cak's avatar

definitely not a twin! That would be very scary is I was a twin!!

cak's avatar

I think Jack was joking, based on our conversation…but I could be wrong, as I frequently am!

Siren's avatar

I am similarly frequently wrong, because I frequently voice my opinion :)

cak's avatar

I can’t believe I just wrote that I’m wrong about things. Darn. I’ve convinced my household that I am always right! (or, so I like to pretend I’ve done this!)

Jack79's avatar

you’re doing it again, see? talking to yourself!

(yes, I WAS joking of course…just thought it was funny that two people were having a dialogue about having a monologue)

cak's avatar

@Jack79 – good catch! :)
