What to do when sick?

Asked by Pango_Vine (27points) January 11th, 2009

My friend has really bad cold where he can barely move, is uber dizzy, and has killer headaches. He has lost his voice for the most part and his seeing spots. He refuses to listen to me and drinking lots of fluid like water, lying down, taking it easy, and not spending too much time starring at a screen. I don’t even know if I’m at all giving good advice. What would you suggest?

What will he drink? Caffeinated soft drinks make you feel better (clear sinuses etc) and also hydrate you.

That sounds worse than a cold. I’d suggest going to the doctor! The headaches and dizziness are especially worrying.

He hates doctors and hospitals. Wouldn’t even go when he sliced knuckle open…wouldn’t stop bleeding for a couple days. kept having to change the bandage…idiot.

Keep an eye on him. Does he have a fever? A stiff neck? He could have menengitis (very serious!). If you notice mental changes, incoherent speech and such, get him to the emergency room.

Edited to add: He probably doesn’t have it, I don’t mean to alarm you! Just keep an eye on him.

OK, I’ll watch, thanks for the help! well, I’ll try to watch. He won’t let me come over so I have been trying to engage him in converstaion over text. He hates letting me know when something is wrong. :S It’s rather aggravating…

Hope he feel better soon. Welcome to Fluther, I hope you find it useful :)

He has stopped seeing spots and now things are just kinda of glowing. He feels lieks his mind is de-attached from his body. And thank you. I have found this place is extremely…don’t know how to say it, nice? Everyong is very kind and there are quick, instant responses from live people. Its nice.

fluids fluids fluids and rest. Chicken soup really IS good too.

Chicken soup, cold medicine, sleep. If he’s addicted to staring at a screen, suggest having it next to his bed or a very cozy couch with pillows and blankets.

@Grisson: Sodas dehydrate you.

Pango Vine, sounds like he’s running a fever. Where on his head were the headaches? Forehead, temples, back of head, all over?

Tea, chicken soup or veggie broth, bananas, rice, apple sauce, toast, juice.

I suggest a call to the doctor, plenty of cool liquids and tea, pea soup or egg drop soup, How long has he had this?

Pango_Vine's avatar

Judochop, since friday. AlfredaPrufroock, I don’t know where the haed-aches are. I didn’t ask and he is asleep now.

@asmonet Not all sodas dehydrate. Caffeine and sodium content can though. Sprite is pretty good on both counts.

I’d say this guy needs help. I’d try to get him to a doctor.

For me, the worst part of a head cold is the sinus pressure and clogging. Try an unmedicated saline nasal spray, squirt it up both nostrils until you can feel it tricking down your throat. Let it set for about a minute, then gently blow your nose. Repeat. Sounds gross, feels gross at first, but wow I am totally sold on this treatment. Instant results, and your are not adding to the burden of medication.

a netti pot is supposed work wonders at relieving sinus preasure, but it scares me.

My bro-in-law swears by the Neilmed flush, sim to nettipot. I am going to get one to have on hand. It seems intimidating now, but probably will not seems so bad the next time my head feels the size of a watermelon.

@Grisson Thanks for that link…I got it wrong on the caffeine!

asmonet's avatar

Thanks for the link. But even if they don’t dehydrate you, when you’re sick you should be drinking water or juice. Not sugar, sodium and bubbles in a can.

Grisson's avatar

@asmonet For general health, yes. But if the goal is to hydrate for a cold or flu, then anything you can hydrate with is a plus. For kids, Sprite or Ginger ale if the sugar gets them to drink, more power to it.

I drink diet sodas, usually with caffeine, but to hydrate in the evening when I have a cold I’ll drink Fresca. Low sodium. No sugar, no caffeine. Basically content-free.

I dunno, when I was a kid I loved water, juice and milk. I have a whole issue with the sugar for kids statement of yours, but that’s another discussion. :)

Hot Tang seems to strip your throat clear of phlegm. The spots and other stuff would send me to a doctor though.
