What is the biggest lie you have ever told and why?

Asked by judochop (16119points) January 11th, 2009

I am not talking about white lies here, I mean big lies. I have told lies at work before to get out of being in trouble. I have also told lies to people long ago that I still feel bad about. Is there anything you want to get off your shoulders?

I lied to a security guy at a supermarket to get my brother out of the security office without alerting my parents. Subsequently, I lied to my parents by not telling them that he’d been caught shoplifting.

I don’t even feel that guilty about it, even though I should. It was in sibling solidarity. I made him promise he’d tell them when he was ready, though. Of course, they found out when the fines were mailed to them. They were furious.

I lied to my best friend and told her everything was fine between me and (my now ex) boyfriend. Being my best friend she knew I was lying though. She tried and tried t get me to tell her what was wrong and I just kept saying that nothing was wrong and I was fine. In truth, things were far from fine. Eventually I couldn’t take it anymore and I called her crying, she rushed to my house, and I told her everything.
I really wish I hadn’t lied to her in the first place. One of the regrets of my life.

I lie to myself everyday about the things I know are wrong, but continue to do (which is pretty huge because I get the worst on both ends). Lying to my parents growing became like second nature because I grew up in a bubble. It was the continuous lies about the same thing that just kept on and kept on, building on top of each other and to this day its like one GIANT lie. It makes me feel like S#it.

@tennesseejac, I bet it would feel good to get this one out in the open.

What makes you think they don’t know anything? Lying often invites lying back, especially when you don’t know how else to deal with it.

@Jeruba : I wouldn’t even know where to start, but yeah it would feel good. They don’t know because they have no reason to suspect anything, I always covered my tracks and made sure to clean up when they were around

My husband’s parents hid from him for 24 years the fact that they knew his secret.

I know plenty about my kids that they don’t think I know.

@Jeruba : hopefully if my parents know they will hide it from me forever. There is no need talking about it

Ah. Then you don’t really want it out. I thought perhaps you did. No further comment.
