Does your learner's permit picture carry over to your driver's license?

Asked by invisiblesplosions (70points) January 13th, 2009

I am taking my driving test tomorrow and am wondering whether or not they will take a new picture. I live in New York State.

No.
They’ll take your picture again, and check yourself before they do. I look fantastic in my picture except for the fact that my necklace is twisted back like I’m a crazy person.

They should give you the option, but look your best because they might just make you take another one whether you like it or not. The new NY license are crap (compared to other states)

They gave me the option, and I kept that photo of 15 year old me until I turned 21. Then it turned into my enemy (plus I moved) so I ditched it. I lived in a different state though.

I live in NY state, got my permit when I was 15ish, and my license when I was 17.

A couple weeks after I passed my driver’s test, my license came in the mail, and the pic of me was the one that was on my permit. They didn’t even give me an option to change it. Hey, fine by me, I was actually smiling in mine. :)

Good luck on your driver’s test! knocks on wood

If you’re a girl, DL pictures look better if you wear a little to much make-up when you take them.

Probably not. The DL you are issued is printed on the spot, by the same machine that takes your picture, at least in IL. The color balance was off on the last DL picture I got, so I look awfully red in the face. I suppose that’s how I look when I get pulled down for speeding, so maybe it was intentional.

@Judi: That is such a cute answer! Did you practice the extra make-up technique or find out by accident?

I don’t know about NY, but in AZ, my old state, you had to take a new one. Underage photos were in profile while drivers 21 and over were straight on shots. Now, I think they make the whole license at a 90 degree angle for the under-aged folks. It makes it really easy on the bars and the kids don’t delay in getting their new license.

But then, oddly, if you don’t move house you can keep the same license and photo for about 50 years.

@bythebay ;
I found out by accident and now I “overdo” my make-up every time I renew my DL.

same picture, most everyone I know want to get a new picture for their license when it expires for 21 since you look wayyy different at 21 then you do on your learner’s permit.

In Illinois your permit is just a couple of words on a piece of paper. You sign it with a pen and try not to loose it. But Illinois is strange, we have the most driving hours and you don’t even have to complete them…

In New York mine carried over (unfortunately). I do believe you have to get a new one when you turn 21. I didn’t because the timing was weird for mine (i got my permit at 18), but I know people who have.
