How to keep in touch with my girlfriend? I'm 2000 miles far from her for next 6 months.

Asked by 2060 (33points) January 14th, 2009

We both use twitter very ofen, but its still not enought, even msn doesnt help. Because sometimes we cant even see the other is online, and keeping msn always on, is not good solution.

Is there any application how she could see me online always my mac is on? I mean like “growl” or the aim button on facebook saying “user is online” ? Maybe we should buy iphone :D

Would be great any dashboard app :D i think i will stay with adium coz nobody gets this question.

Thanks for responses :)

I found that Skype was excellent for communicating with my daughter who was halfway around the world for a year.

That was 2006 and was just voice. Now Skype has both chat and voice (which can be nice if you’re really missing her) capabilities. For chat, it has an advantage over MSN and AIM in that you can be connected to more than one computer and the text conversation gets logged on both. So in a way, it’s like e-mail. You answer when you can, and you don’t have to be at the computer all the time.

I use it for inter-office communication. There is also an add-in for screen sharing, if that is of interest.

Skype does video as well. Then, Yahoo also provides email, chat and video. There are many choices.

Two great options above. Have you tried iChat on your Mac? Do you have the built-in camera on your Mac? Is Skype charging a fee to use the video service now?

I’d like to use ichat, but then my question would go like, is there any msn or yahoo plugin for ichat. Because nobody in europe uses aim. Thanks guys anyways.

We use also video chat often, but this question was more about the dash app, im sorry i knew nobody will get :) anyways, i appreciate your responses

the aim button on facebook saying “user is online”, this is actually what we need :) anyone know small app like this?

My girlfriend lives 4000 miles away from me. I keep in touch with her using iChat (or yahoo if I use a PC – only coz she has a mac and so her version of msn doesn’t have a video chat)
We call each other rarely, unless we really miss each other or it’s a special occasion like a birthday, xmas or new years eve,
Having a webcam is a god send because it really shortens the distance.
It’s hard at first but you’ll be alright :) I promise.

2060,
I feel for you. I’m a shorter distance from bf than you are from my girlfriend but i can relate.
my bf and i use msn, webcams, and the phone. Getting a good long distance plan or some sort of unlimited plan is always a good idea.
Its tough, but using the three gaps the distance.
I wish you the best.

Thanks really much :)

My girlfriend got an unlimited long distance plan so she just calls me – or I call her and she calls me back.

Get a cell phone plan with a “my 5” fature and add her so you get free calls to her. Then buy the world’s smallest bluetooth and stay connected all day.

Oh man, well I wish the best for you, 2060! my bf and I are in an LDR (he’s in Cali, I’m in Pa) but we make it work.

I do suggest getting an unlimited phone plan or even one those “myFaves” plans from T-Mobile so you can talk to her unlimited.

As for the MSN issue, you can always get a good phone that you can use MSN on. You can also Twitter each other (either from your PC or your cell) to tell when you’ll be online. Just send a direct message.

I def suggest getting a good phone with a good mobile IM client on it, if you don’t already have one. Sidekicks are pretty cheap used and are great for typing on, if you don’t mind that sort of thing.
