Does anyone have any experiences with dude ranches?

Asked by hannamonster (11points) January 17th, 2009

A friend and I want to work at a dude ranch this summer. We are both very experienced riders and would love to be wranglers. Has anyone visited a dude ranch they loved? Or know of any good ones/ones that are hiring?

The only ranch I know anything about is the Bar None from the nickelodeon show Hey Dude. I’m sure this isn’t helpful to you.

Try searching google for dude ranch.
And try searching google for ‘work experience at ranch’.
etc
google is quite useful to find out things about things.

I understand you are asking about ‘personal experiences’ before you have a go at me for being unhelpful, but being a gap year student I can tell you the web has everything you need to know about traveling and work experience

An old friend of mine once worked at one, I think in Wyoming? She had a pretty good experience there – she was simply a trail guide (so she didn’t have to mess with teaching those people with no horse experience how to groom, saddle, bridle, mount, etc.) I can’t remember the name of the one she worked at though. Sorry. You could check EquiStaff.com, Yard&Groom, HorseJobsOnline, or AgriSeek for starters to see if any ranches have postings for staff. Or, just look up dude ranches online to get their individual websites, where they probably have some type of contact info. The only thing I would advise is to be careful of affiliation, as some of the ranches are religious. One of my friends was offered a job at one for a summer, but it was a Christian dude ranch. Her only options for employment were to work in the kitchen or to clean rooms, do laundry, etc. She was absolutely not allowed to work with the horses or anywhere near the stables and would have had to wear an ankle length skirt at all times. Obviously, she did not take the job.
