Asked by johnny0313x (1855points) January 18th, 2009

I certainly wouldn’t buy the mini right now. It has to get updated soon.

It will be updated soon, so wait 2 weeks and buy the mac mini

The Acer is much more value than the Mac Mini. But like the others have said, wait two weeks or a month until they update it, then decide if it’s still worth the value.

How do you guys no it it will be updated in two weeks?

The Mac Buyer’s Guide at MacRumors is what I use—they’re usually right, or at least close! :)

Okay cause I called apple and they played dumb, inface the one guy was almost rude about it like he was pissed that I knew they were gonna upgrade it lol. He told me they have no schedule updates and it is always a suprise to them. Then he was like how did you find that out?

deusexmachina's avatar

Of course they play dumb… otherwise, they’d know that a new Mac Mini was coming out and would advise customers against buying an “old one” now. ;)

i no i think thats kinda bullshit, thats what i dont like about apple because i feel like they are to secretive and their marketing sometimes makes you feel like you’ve just been made a fool.

They are secretive, tight-lipped, and up until recently was able to completely control what hardware their operating system (legitimately) ran on. That’s the approach they’ve always taken as a company. Is it mean? Maybe. It sure isn’t fun from the customer’s viewpoint. Is it ethical? Of course it is. Keep in mind, knowledge is power (especially in the fast moving tech world, where knowledge of your competitor and their progress can give a huge advantage), and they’re choosing to keep their power under control. Or more simply put: they have nothing to gain by switching to a “knowledge is free” approach. In fact, doing so would put pressure on the developers to have a product finished by Date X, makes their future development crystal clear to competitors thus removing any element of surprise and opportunity for first adopter revenue, etc etc. And what do they gain by doing this? Customers now know when products are launched, so they won’t buy things when they’re due to be renewed. So for all that effort, Apple loses money along with everything else they lose. No kidding they’re not switching anytime soon!!
