In your opinion, what is the best frozen pizza on the market?

Asked by cak (15863points) February 4th, 2009

This stems from a question asked by jonsblond, http://www.fluther.com/disc/34033/what-have-you-had-to-give-up/ . Both of our households have given up the typical “pizza night” – meaning we’ve ditched delivery pizza. Now, we have frozen pizza. Sometimes, in my house, we have homemade pizza instead of frozen – depends on what is on hand.

Help out the households converting to frozen pizza!! :)

I just spoke about this there, but DiGorno’s is really good.

The Target brand pizzas are kinda ok, but nothing special. Honestly, I’ll buy whatever they have for the 2-for-1 deal.

saar's avatar

I like to buy 1/2 baked pizzas from my local pizza shop and put them in the freezer. They are much better than buying the grocery store frozen pizzas. If you ask most pizza shops they will do this for you.

onesecondregrets's avatar

Hahah refer to the previous question “What have you had to give up?”‘s answers :P.

eponymoushipster's avatar

Something that’s fun, esp. if you have kids, is a “make your own pie” night (say that with a Kramer voice.) There are TONS of dough recipes, and you can buy the toppings cheaper than adding them.

odds are there’ll be leftovers too. you know that weird thing where you cook, then you’re not as hungry?

chyna's avatar

I like fresheta and digorno’s. But I can go to Little Ceaser’s and buy the Hot and Ready peperoni pizza’s for 5.00 for a large. That is cheaper than the frozen ones.

cak's avatar

@chyna – for us, Little Ceaser’s would work, but my hubby had a bad experience, I’ll leave it at that! ;~)

eponymoushipster's avatar

@chyna i love Pizza, Pizza, but those Hot and Ready’s can be Hit and Miss. sometimes they’re kinda…old.

miasmom's avatar

I like CPK (California Pizza Kitchen) BBQ chicken pizza. You don’t get as much for your money, but it’s so tasty.

cwilbur's avatar

I make homemade pizza. It’s a little bit more work, but tends to be much better than a frozen pizza (and quite a bit better than chain-delivery pizza).

chyna's avatar

@eponymoushipster You are right. I have had a couple of old ones, but I still keep going back. I guess it is just easier.

jonsblond's avatar

In the Midwest it’s Butch’s Pizza. Thin crust and great sauce.

@cak great question ;)

KrystaElyse's avatar

@miasmom – I second CPK! It’s definitely more expensive though than the other brands. I wish we had a CPK nearby :(

@cwilbur – Homemade pizza is definitely better than frozen! And if you don’t want to make the dough yourself but still want the homemade taste, you can purchase the ready-made dough at your local pizza place or sometimes at the bakery in your supermarket.

miasmom's avatar

@KrystaElyse sometimes you can get CPK pizza at Costco, 3 for 10 bucks, but at our Costco they never have the BBQ chicken, makes me sad!

KrystaElyse's avatar

@miasmom – Ohh, I had no idea, that’s not a bad deal! I’ll have to check it out. The BBQ chicken one is definitely gooooood!

jonsblond's avatar

@cwilbur We make our own French bread pizzas at times. Definately tastes alot better than frozen. A loaf, cut lengthwise, then in half, will give you 4 large servings.

I’m hungry now!

madcapper's avatar

@miasmom COK all day! but I love the Sicilian…
Also they make a Franks Red Hot Buffalo Chicken Pizza, I think it is just made by Franks, that is pure tastiness…

cak's avatar

@everyone – thanks! Great suggestions – and some very wonderful ideas, too!

We do pita pizzas, mini pizzas – but I will be adding *jonsblond’s (and blondesjon) french bread pizza idea – in fact, we may do it tonight. I have everything to throw that together.

@miasmom – I can find CPK, but it’s hit and miss, around here. Sometimes, it’s in stock, most of the time, sold out. Then the problem is to get to it before the 15yr old and her friends inhale it! GRRRR!!

@cwilbur – you are absolutely correct! Homemade is better – but sometimes, it just gotta be frozen. Depends on if it is chemo week or not. (ultimate slacker, chemo week!)

blondie411's avatar

i buy CPK White Pizza, most of the time I make it from scratch

shilolo's avatar

Definitely not the best, but brings back memories is Ellio’s Pizza. I don’t routinely buy frozen pizza at home, so, this is the best I could do.

KrystaElyse's avatar

@shilolo – I totally remember Ellio’s! Haha, you’re right, they weren’t that great. I don’t see them in the stores here anymore though =/

eponymoushipster's avatar

@shilolo Yeah, Ellios was definitely 80s after-school-special pizza. I think once at school, on pizza day, the servedus Stouffer’s french bread pizza, which is also quite lame.

cak's avatar

@shilolo – they still sell that in a store where I shop! I haven’t bought it for my family, yet – I could torture them, though!

mcbealer's avatar

CPK’s margherita is nice but my favorite frozen pizza can be found at Target. It’s a spinach and goat cheese pizza with tomatoes made by Archer Farms.

madcapper's avatar

I just noticed that I said “COK, all the way!” instead of CPK. Please note this correction as I have never eaten anything by the name of COK…

eponymoushipster's avatar

@madcapper mwhahaha! freudian slip?!

mcbealer's avatar

@ mad ~ too funny

mcbealer's avatar

BTW your lurve is at 1669

madcapper's avatar

@eponymoushipster hahahaha no I don’t think so…

eponymoushipster's avatar

@madcapper so i guess @madcapper is trying to tell us he’s a big fan of the sausage pizza. Pizza Hut has a Meat Lover’s pie. heh.

madcapper's avatar

hahahahaha ooooo meat lovers….

chyna's avatar

@madcapper COK eheheh…uh huh

jonsblond's avatar

@madcapper I can’t quit laughing. Too funny!

shilolo's avatar

@cak. It isn’t torture. Ellio’s isn’t terrible, and breaks apart into handy little squares. I could eat a whole box right now, just for old-times sake!

cak's avatar

@shilolo – My memories involve an older sister that undercooked things. It’s on my list – I’m rotating these pizzas! I’m willing to try them all to find the ones my family likes.

cak's avatar

@madcapper – I left it alone, didn’t say a word, but it certainly raised my eyebrows!! I was starting to think that we weren’t talking about the same thing! ;)

madcapper's avatar

@cak hahah no no my ring finger just so happened to press a 1/4” to far to the left…

cak's avatar

@madcapper – sure! ;~)

Lurve to you – for rolling with it!

madcapper's avatar

haha thanks

Just a suggestion since the thread is on frozen pizzas… invest in a Pizza Pizzazz;. As my brother once put it, this contraption is, “God’s gift to frozen pizza.” My roommate has one, and I bought one for my mom for Christmas. I swear, this thing can take a $2 Jack’s pizza and make it taste like it’s from a restaurant. Especially great for higher-quality pizzas like CPK.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@dlm812 does this device have anything to do with Billy Mays and/or Vince the ShamWow guy?

because i will buy it if so.

dlm812's avatar

NO. ABSOLUTELY NOT. It’s just made by Presto. You can buy it at almost any kitchen gadget store or Walmart, Target, etc. usually. Heck no, I WOULD NOT promote Billy Mays nor the ShamWow guy.

dlm812's avatar

I just used to work at a Kitchen Collection and that is where I bought the one for my mom, so I knew I could find a picture of it there.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@dlm812 ok. it looks pretty cool. kinda expensive for what it is though – as Alton Brown would say, “a unitasker”.

dlm812's avatar

I guess it is somewhat pricey, but it really does make a difference in the quality of pizza… and if you have a gas stove it helps cut down on your gas bills b/c you don’t have to turn on your oven. It is electric and cooks a regular thin crust pizza in about 10–12 minutes tops.

dlm812's avatar

Just a suggestion anyway :)

cak's avatar

@dlm812 – I have seen one of those – I wondered if they worked.

cak's avatar

@eponymoushipster—-I will have nightmares about the ShamWow guy. Billy Mayes is almost peaceful and quiet, compared to the ShamWow guy. Nightmares, I tell ya!

chyna's avatar

@cak Are you shouting?

cak's avatar

@chyna – no, that’s fear. That Shamwow guy scares me. However, I am looking for ways to seek revenge on epony!

eponymoushipster's avatar

in other, more to the thread, less fearing for my life news – i had a frescetta PizzAmore Pepperoni Duo pizza tonight, with beer no less, and it was quite good. herbed crust to boot!

scurries back to hiding place

cak's avatar

@eponymoushipster – you mentioned Vince, that damn Shamwow guy! Seriously, he’s worse than Billy Mayes! My husband hears the commercial and turns it up – I hate those commercials – it’s a form of torture!!

cak's avatar

@eponymoushipster – great suggestion! Oh and my husband thinks you rock. He’s cracking up about the mention of the shamwow guy!

eponymoushipster's avatar

@cak oh. well. he is worse than billy mayes, except now billy mayes is shilling insurance or something. Vince is creepy with the mic set on his head.

turning up the volume is cruel and unusual, though.

tell your husband that i think Vince really shines when he says “Hey cameraguy, are you getting this?!”. As if the camera guy bows to Vince.

chyna's avatar

@cak Oh, I thought you were shouting to be heard over Shamwow guy.

cak's avatar

@chyna – Ha! No, I couldn’t possibly be louder or more obnoxious than him!

@epony – oh yeah, I forgot that part – probably on purpose.

chyna's avatar

@eponymoushipster Yeah, he seems very condescending when he asks the camera guy if he is getting this.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@chyna right?! i imagine there was a “team meeting” right before they shot the commercial, something like this:

sound guy, you hearing me? ok.
director, you ready to be directing stuff? yeah!
Vince (talking to self), you ready to be a asshat? (grabs mic) ooohhh yeahhhh

and history was made.

cak's avatar

He probably sleeps with the headset on.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@cak well, he ain’t sleeping with a woman. actually, maybe she’s in the other room, and he talks to her thru it.

“Hey, lady, am I pleasuring you over there?”

cak's avatar

bwahahahahahahaha!!! So wrong, but so funny! (scary, too!)

eponymoushipster's avatar

@cak how do you think she feels?!

my guess, if you asked them, is that he’s all “sham” and no “wow” whatsoever.

cak's avatar

If I could lurve you again, I would! you just summed up my first marriage!

eponymoushipster's avatar

@cak lurve for the whisper comment!

jonsblond's avatar

@cak @eponymoushipster How is Billy worse than the Shamwow guy? We know Billy by his first name, and he never sleeps!

eponymoushipster's avatar

@jonsblond we know the shamwow guys first name too, Vince.

he says it in the first few seconds of the ad

frankly, i think this could be the new rickroll.

jonsblond's avatar

@eponymoushipster I guess Billy has been such a staple I had missed Vince’s name. Still, Billy never sleeps!

eponymoushipster's avatar

@jonsblond well, he says it pretty damn fast. but it’s true – Billy never sleeps. probably a mixture of OxyClean and Oxycotin.

Plus, his beard might be an entity unto itself.

jonsblond's avatar

@eponymoushipster lol Love how this thread went from frozen pizza to infomercials. ;)

cak's avatar

@jonsblond he’s just scary. Did you ever see It? He reminds me of the clown. Yuck.

And that headphone….seriously? Haven’t we progressed a little further than the, ” would you like fries with that,” headset?

So many reason not to like Vince. Plus…he’s just annoying.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@cak you seriously hate this guy, wow. :)

cak's avatar

this is where I finally admit I need therapy!
