How much profit margin does a mobile carrier make from an average customer?

these guys are fighting each other for market share and they will shave a deal down real skinny in order to get the two year commitment.

Really? I thought they were making huuuuge profits, and trying to keep it from the public… Read it in the New York Times if I remember correctly.

They are one of the market segments I consider an oligopoly. So few firms exist that they compete with advertising, not cutting the price. They use spontaneous collusion to do this.

It is similar to Coke and Pepsi. They make tons of cash selling sugar water.
