Any way to make my hands stop shaking?

Asked by A_Wood (201points) March 7th, 2009

For years, I’ve always had really shaky hands, and since I’ve gotten a tablet, I’ve really noticed it. Any suggestions on how to steady my hands?

Here is what Dr. Andrew Weil says. Excerpt:

“First, you should try to find out why your hands are shaking. I would recommend seeking a neurological evaluation since there are a number of conditions, including Parkinson’s disease, that could be responsible. Another possible cause is a disorder called “essential tremor”, which is common among older adults and occurs 20 times more often than Parkinson’s disease. Unlike Parkinson’s, essential tremor isn’t due to an underlying disease and doesn’t lead to serious complications. Shaky hands also could be due to anxiety, but to reach this diagnosis, a physician must first rule out physical causes. In addition to essential tremor and Parkinson’s, shaky hands may be caused by thyroid disease, drug side effects or heavy metal poisoning.

Sometimes the nature of symptoms suggests the diagnosis. For example, essential tremor usually is seen when you are using your hands, while the tremor associated with Parkinson’s typically occurs when your hands are at rest.

Good luck!

@Blondesjon Gosh, what great advice!

Have you seen a doctor? Your hands aren’t supposed to just shake, it’s a sign of something.

Good luck.

My fathers hands started shaking in his mid-40s out of nowhere. When he was 46 he was diagnosed with parkinsons disease.

Its not normal for your hands to shake, I would get yourself checked out. If for no other reason than to give yourself peace of mind.

I’m also 16, so I think (hope) it’s not Parkinson’s, but I think I will get myself checked out.

@Marina thanks for the information. I will look into that for my mom. I don’t think she has parkinson’s but I will look into “essential tremor” with her doctor. I had never heard of that. (I love this site for all the infomation shared).

Obviously you need to smoke a pack of cigarettes or take some diazepam. Haven’t you played Metal Gear Solid?

That, or I have to go hide under a box.

Are you anxious about anything that could manifest in your hands shaking? Think about that too, and talk to your doctor about any undue stresses you may have in your life right now, just in case it’s a mind-body thing.

It more than likely isn’t. It’s been going on for years, but I’ve only started really noticing it when I’ve been using my tablet and watching my cursor shake.

If you have seen your MD with no satisfaction, and if this was happening to me, I would probably try the amino acids taurine and creatine, 5-HTP, flaxseed oil with cottage cheese, a good (that means expensive) bio-active mult B-Vitamin Supplement, Calcium/Magnesium (2:1 ratio), Selenium, Ester C and a low dose multi vitamin.
But like the others have said try and see a specialist.

See a doctor! Preferably a neurologist.
