How do you choose a name for a new pet?

Asked by timeand_distance (1287points) March 28th, 2009

I’m getting a dutch bunny, but I dont know what to name it, and I’m not really sure how to come up with a good, fitting name, either. So, how do you usually go about naming a new pet?

First of all. I hope this is a rescued bunnie. Second. I always use a part of nature. My dogs names are Forrest sunnie and lou. Haha. It’s bed time.

Meet the pet and see if some characteristic stands out.

Or just say “It’s a dutch bunny, I’ll name it Hans Brinker.”

@berocky1 I’d love to rescue one, but I have no idea where to find one that would need rescuing. Any ideas on that? Note: the human society here isn’t an option, just in case that was something you were going to suggest. :)

Well I would try and find a local animal sanctuary. And always remember to spay and neuter. If you can’t find a rescue you can still get a pure bred it’s a personal decision. Good luck on your animal journey!

I don’t think there’s a particular process for naming a pet well… for me it’s just about waiting for that special inspiration :)

my last pet was a Siberian hamster named “natalia” after the love of my life, Natalie Portman

Some name inevitably presents itself and then we go “yes, that’s his name!”.

We always go by personality, looks, or the orgin of the animal we have.
At the moment we have a Pekingese dog. They are from China, so we gave him a chinese name, Bao Bei (meaning tresured or precious).
Or just go with something fun, when I was in highschool I had a hamster, named him Love and put little hearts on his tank. :)

We just come up with a name, usually a person’s name.
We have a cat named Spencer (i named him) and a cat named Henry (my husband named him) I dunno, isn’t it a white people thing to give them human names lol.
I just liked the names, and it totally suits them.

These days, our pets are named after characters in John Wayne movies (my husband is a huge fan). Our cats are name Katy and Chance, and we had a porch cat (since adopted by a neighbor) named Rooster. In the past, I’ve had all sorts of odd names for my pets, usually based on looks or personality with one notable exception. I was once given a kitten by a boyfriend, and my mother and I couldn’t decide on a name. While we waited for inspiration we called her baby kitty. Baby stuck and became her name by default.

How about Tulip?

I go for joke names, so on this one, I’m with Darwin. Or something offbeat. I mean, we have a cat named Mewsette.

Apparently, she’s French.

Like many others, we usually wait and see if a name will arise due to personality or the background of the pet. We also may go through several names trying them out for 1–2 days to see if they fit. I love to have unique names, but a few of ours have ended up with very “typical” names because it’s the only thing that fits them.

I contemplate their character and nature, then I associate it with random thoughts until I find a name I like.

I always go by my pets personality, or looks. I once had a pet when he was a puppy he had a small body and long legs. Reminded me of a spider, so i named him spyder.

@asmonet I really like Darwin, actually.
