You should use the Genius feature on iTunes.

I got a genius playlist of “Girlfriend in a Coma,” and here’s what was on it:

The Last of the Famous International Playboys – Morrissey
Help the Aged – Pulp
How Beautiful You Are – The Cure
Almost With You – The Church
Shadow Play – Joy Division
William, It Was Really Nothing – The Smiths
Totally Wired – The Fall
Bring On the Dancing Horses – Echo and the Bunnymen
1963 – New Order
Sale of the Century – Sleeper
Why Don’t You Find Out for Yourself – Morrissey
Stereo – Pavement
Sinking – The Cure
Grey Cell Green – Ned’s Atomic Dustbin
Motorcrash – The Sugarcubes
Tame – The Pixies
Mote – Sonic Youth
Tiny Tears – Tindersticks
Sheep – The Housemartins
You and Your Sister – This Mortal Coil
The Boy Who Ran Away – Mystery Jets
Looking for a Kiss – New York Dolls
Where Damage Isn’t Already Done – The Radio Dept.
Achin’ to Be – The Replacements
Made of Stone – The Stone Roses

… that’s out of your own collection however. You could also use allmusic.com and last.fm to research artists who are like your favorites.

Other bands on a genius playlist for Tears for Fears:

The Psychedelic Furs, Pet Shop Boys, David Bowie, Flock of Seagulls, The English Beat, The Shins, Roxy Music, The Arcade Fire, Talking Heads, Erasure, The Jam, Alphaville, Peter Gabriel, and Mazzy Star.

There were a lot of bands repeated from the Smiths genius playlist as well.
