There are not going to be many available with so many studios cutting staff and so many qualified and experienced people looking for the same sort of position.

What is your background and experience? That’s typically a position you get promoted to.

Google “art directors, professional organizations” for your area and take part as a junior member. Volunteer for things where they need art supervision, like for a local rep theatre. Help out on indie/college film shoots where they could use that sort of help for free and build up credits. Tell people you’re looking to be an art director when you do this stuff.

This is akin to what I’ll have to do to get back into film, myself, so hang in there. It takes time to build the relationships that will get you where you want to go, but professional organizations and helping out people who need what you can offer is a great start.

Network. Join your local AIGA chapter and attend meetings. Online, look at Creative Hotlist, Coroflot, Indeed, and Authentic Jobs.

Good luck. I recently took a full-time Art Director job for a 40% pay cut after a year of searching and 160 resume submissions. And I’ve been working as a visual artist almost 30 years.
