How can I keep my glasses from slipping out of my pocket?

Asked by PerryDolia (3481points) August 13th, 2009

I carry my reading glasses in the breast pocket of my shirt. Whenever I bend over, the glasses slip out and hit the floor, carpet, road, concrete or whatever. I have gotten reasonably good at putting my hand on my pocket to prevent the glasses from slipping out, but sometimes I need both hands for whatever I am doing.

I know I could put the glasses in some kind of case, but I am already enough of a nerd without a bulky case in my shirt pocket.

I have a half baked idea to put magnets on the ear arm part of the glasses to clamp them to the shirt pocket (one arm outside, one inside), but there must be a better way.

Any ideas how I can keep my glasses from slipping out of my pocket?

Easy. Don’t put them in your pocket.

Wear them on a cord or chain around your neck. Forget about the silly definitions of nerdiness. Or try a back pocket that buttons on trousers. (Lenscrafters carry cords and chains.)

Maybe a little strip of cloth and a snap and a alligator clip. It shouldn’t be hard to whip something up.

I recognise this ‘problem’.
Never thought about solutions for it before though.
But since you asked, it made me think of this: put a piece of thin rubbery stuff in your pocket (the size of a playing-card for example).
Put the glasses in your pocket, so they would be between your shirt and the rubbery thing.
Due to the anti-slipperyness, they would stay in. Hopefully.

Wear shirts with button-closed or zip-closed front pockets.

Hold them in your mouth while you bend over.

Stop hanging upside-down.

In addition to @rebbel, you could probably try looking for something like this at a cookware store, as they deal in silicone things that might fit in your pocket if it were envelope-sized or something…

@PerryDolia I thought I’ve seen an idea like what you are talking about in an infomercial. I think it was “Magic Clip” Sunglasses where they had magnets on the arms to keep them closed or to clip to a shirt. Google

You could get one of those pocket cases to keep them in. Easy and cheesy!

@scamp
Got one, but I do not wish to prove to everyone what a nerdling I really am.

@PerryDolia Well, they come in all kinds of shapes and sizes, so you could get a cool one!

Also, with a case, you could keep your glasses in your pants pocket instead of your shirt pocket, so no one would really have to see the case, and your glasses would be protected.

Try those metal paper clips/clamps with the two wire handles. I bought some with rubberized handles recently at Office Max. I think you could clamp it to the pocket and slide an arm through the handles.

I found this site because I have the exact same problem. It doesent bother me during Winter because I wear a sweater which keeps glasses from falling out. As soon as Summer arrives I start breaking glasses and losing them. I see that a company called iSPEX have a clip but they only sell in USA , and Im not sure it is what I want anyway.I live in the far side of the world.

I just started putting my reading glasses in my shirt pocket, and have lost or broken 4 of them in the last 5 months due to them falling out of my shirt pocket. I give up. Shirt pockets without buttons are only to be used for fashion purposes and not to put stuff in them.
