What are some good ways to travel in and around Europe for cheap?

Asked by brettvdb (1192points) August 24th, 2009

I’m heading to Europe in a few months and I’m looking for cheap ways of traveling between different countries.

I’ve already heard about Busabout.com and know about Eurail passes – I’m just wondering if anyone has experience with any other type of similar service that they might recommend!

Hostels and couchsurfing.com! Two of my friends just got back from Europe for a month and they saved a ton of money staying in hostels and using that website.

Will definitely be using hostels. I have heard about couchsurfing.com but the idea just seems a bit weird to me – everything I’ve heard so far about it though has been positive, so I will definitely look into this a bit more.

Yeah, I’ve never tried it myself either. I’ve only heard good things as well, but I’d prefer to do it during a trip when I wasn’t by myself.

Hitchhiking ;-)

Also, when in the Netherlands, you can get a train ticket with discount, and then when you’re in the train and the conductor comes by to check tickets, you ask around is someone has a discount card you can travel along with. Can save you 60% of expenses (which is only worth it if you travel really long distances or very often, but still).

couchsurfing looks cool, bookmarked for the future, just in case :)

Get a Europass. You can hop and off the trains all over Europe for a week.

The Man in Seat 61 is a great site for learning all about the railroad system in Europe, ordering tickets and what trips to take.

My son is in Europe right now. He stretched his trip budget so he could stay longer, and couch surfing was one way, hostels another. I referred him to couchsurfing.com after learning about it here, and he checked it out.

I also insisted that he stay in a fine hotel a couple of times so he could have the full range of experience. So far all his arrangements have worked out just fine. He is traveling between cities by Eurailpass and renting bicycles for local transportation.

And another cheap airline from Britain to places in Europe is www.flybe.com.
