Job interview 'thank you note' etiquette?

Asked by figbash (7483points) September 11th, 2009

Recently I’ve been interviewing for positions that have upwards of 6 rounds of interviews, some of them with panels of three or more people per interview. I’m used to sending ‘thank you’ notes after interviews, but do I have to send a thank you note to every single person in each interview, and for each instance? We’re talking about 20 potential thank you notes, here.

Also, what’s the best way to include the HR Manager in the thank you note process? Do they get one? Each time as well?

Don’t.

Maybe do a personal note to each person after the first interview…. after that maybe you can do a group thank you. Sending a card is nice.

When the process involves that many people, you can send notes o only the key decisionmakers. For example, the person that you would report to if you got the job and that person’s boss.

If you care to, it would be nice to ask the person to pass on your thanks to (name them) the others that you interviewed with.

Although, if you are really interested in the position, and you really like the people you talked to, and you have follow up comments to some of the questions they asked, then it doesn’t hurt to thank them all, individually. That’s what I did for my current job.

I made the mistake of not getting my thank you card done right after the interview, so around the time period the interviewer said she’d be finishing interviews, I called her to thank her. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not, but it was a pretty informal interview.
