While driving down the road, what is something the other drivers do that annoys you?

Asked by MerMaidBlu (426points) September 21st, 2009

I was headed to work today and encountered quite a few things. I got behind someone who was in the passing lane and going the same speed as the guy in the slower lane. A little closer to my destination I got behind a woman who was driving fifteen mph under the speed limit because she was more focused on her telephone conversation than where she was going. So, just wondering what some common peeves are while on the road.

I hate it when the person in front of me is constantly braking for no reason, drives me nuts (no pun intended).

justn's avatar

I don’t like it when people don’t use turn signals, drive significantly under the speed limit, brake for no reason, and treat our 3 lane surface streets like a racetrack.

erichw1504's avatar

I can’t stand it when someone follows me too closely, especially on the highway. So, usually I slow down a little just to piss them off (I guess that’s the road rage in me).

autumn43's avatar

I hate it when the guy in front of me stops short (we were going 40 to 45 mph) – like there is no one else behind him – to decide if he needs to go into the Babys-R-Us parking lot! Meanwhile, 2 other people behind me are slamming on their brakes. I have a horn and I know how to use it.

erichw1504's avatar

Another things I’ve noticed is people are either unaware that they can turn right on red (at least at most intersections) or just don’t bother. That really grinds my gears.

Lightlyseared's avatar

Overtakes you and then imediately turns left off the road in front of you.

marinelife's avatar

I hate it when people stop, and then use their turn signal.

mrentropy's avatar

I don’t care for it when someone cuts over three or four lanes of roadway to get to an exit or street.

Unfortunately, here in Austin, TX, it appears as if the roads are designed to make people do just that.

Driving under the speed limit. I tend to come across a few “Sunday drivers” on my way to work in the morning. I drive along an old country road with no passing lane. Usually, with so much oncoming traffic, I’m unable to pass. Hate to say it, but, it’s usually Cotton Tops.

Supacase's avatar

Drivers who stop in the left lane to make a left turn when there is a center turning lane. Get in it!

CMaz's avatar

I hate when they crash into me.

ItalianPrincess1217's avatar

Maybe I’m dramatic but very few things DON’T frustrate when I’m driving. It just seems like as soon as I get on the road so does every incompetent driver in the city! Where do these people get their license from?

lefteh's avatar

I’m frustrated by people who drive the speed limit. Is that bad?

stratman37's avatar

I hate it when someone quickly pulls out in front of me, as tho’ they’re in a hurry, and then they drive slow like all they wanted was to be in front of me. If you’re gonna be reckless when you’re comin’ onto the road, keep it up and drive it like you stole it!

brinibear's avatar

I hate it when somebody is getting too close for comfort behind me, and I brake check their asses to make sure they stop.

LJC's avatar

@lefteh yes that is bad.

This is what I hate… Waiting for a green arrow to turn left at an intersection, and the lady in front of me is doing her makeup. The green arrow happens and she doesn’t see it. My horn doesn’t work very well so I’m stuck behind her pounding on my steering wheel. The green arrow turns yellow and she finally looks up and drives through at the last second leaving me to wait another cycle. That happened TWICE this summer by two different ladies. I’m not picking on ladies here… I could see men and woman doing this by texting at traffic lights.

people who tailgate and don’t use turn signals. how freaking lazy do you have to be to not signal???? all you have to do is move your finger and bam…signal on. lazy lazy lazy people

trailsillustrated's avatar

get off their cellphones and pay attention!

onesecondregrets's avatar

Have no patience at all and bad tempers.

galileogirl's avatar

I drive in the city and most of my 6 mile drive to work is on 2 three lane roads that have timed lights on just about every corner. If you drive the speed limit you sail through without hitting a red light. However there are an inordinate number of drivers who tailgate, honk their horns and slalom across lanes and end up stopping and going every couple of blocks.

I also hate the guys who honk when you brake before you make a turn to avoid hitting a pedestrian in the crosswalk. Look before you honk, dumbass!

AstroChuck's avatar

I hate it when the other drivers ignore the fact that I own the road.

autumn43's avatar

@Astrochuck! Was that YOU stopping and looking at Babys-R-Us?????

Sarcasm's avatar

People who turn on their turn signals once they’re half-way into the desired lane.
People in crowded freeways who insist on getting bumper-to-bumper. It doesn’t help the flow of traffic at all. The closer cars are on a freeway, the slower they go, period.

Facade's avatar

People who purposefully driving right beside you trying to initiate a conversation…while driving…in traffic…No, I do not want your phone number. No, you cannot have mine. No, I will not pull into the parking lot so we can talk. Yes, I just might injure you if you do not leave me alone.

charliecompany34's avatar

i abhor tailgaters. stupid drivers who drive too closely in traffic in a construction lane when it is possible that moving cars can stop at any moment unexpectedly. they are the idiots who cause senseless accidents that tie up rush hours for, literally hours. because you followed so closely and traffic stopped ahead, i am late because of your selfishness and lack of respect for safety.

five99one's avatar

Like you, I hate it when someone is in the passing lane and driving the same speed as the person in the right lane. Get in the right lane if you aren’t going to pass or speed! And just people that generally drive under the speed limit. Or around the speed limit. Basically, anything that prevents me from driving the way I want to.

charliecompany34's avatar

oh and while i’m on a roll here: THE STUPID BRAKER.

because he/she is tailgating, the driver keeps on braking. that just perpetuates all the traffic in the queue behind you. if you just hang back a few more yards, you wont have to brake at all. just take your foot off the pedal and coast when the traffic slows.

charliecompany34's avatar

AND, the braker who brakes for no OBVIOUS OR APPARENT reason in free-flowing traffic!

charliecompany34's avatar

AND
and, finally, the immediate braker who jams on the brakes when they see a state trooper ahead!

STOP IT DAMMIT!

here’s a helpful hint: troopers can tell when you are braking suddenly. don’t do that shit. just take your foot off the accelerator and let your car coast by, braking suddenly brings attention to the fact you are indeed speeding. your immediate braking causes accidents. just use common sense and ease up on the pedal.

@thedude Welcome to Fluther. Lurve.
I hate being in bumper to bumper traffic, and some douche jumps into an exit or entrance lane to pass a bunch of cars, before jumping back into line.

- drivers talking on cell phones / texting
– men shaving with electric razors
– women applying make-up
– people eating a meal while driving
– tailgaters
– those who don’t use turn signals
– drivers who don’t know the difference between high beam and low beam headlights
-people who drive 35 m.p.h. in the fast lane
– discourteous individuals who don’t allow you room to merge onto freeways
– people who drive without headlights at night (I’ve seen this alot – seriously)

filmfann's avatar

I will admit that I am fascinated watching women put on makeup while driving.

Sarcasm's avatar

I saw a woman driving around backroads of my town putting on makeup and trying to talk on the phone simultaneously. I was really confused. How could you be in that much of a hurry?

ESV's avatar

People blasting off their music like I it’s cool or something when it’s not.

Jack79's avatar

driving slowly on the fast lane, and indicating without a clear sign about what they’re actually about to do (eg indicating that they’ll turn right but staying straight and not slowing down at the corner)

and yes, I’m sorry to say that 90% of the people who do all these annoying and confusing things are women. The other 10% is a senile old man who forgot his glasses at home.

Austinlad's avatar

Talking on cell phone !!!

five99one's avatar

@ESV I blast my music, not because I think it’s cool, but because I like to play it loudly. That’s just how I listen to music, regardless of whether I’m in the car or not.

charliecompany34's avatar

is it just me or do you notice more women speeding past you these days? they’re usually the only person in the car and range in ages from 21 to about 45. what is the rush? why are you speeding ahead of traffic that is already going beyond the speed limit?

Jack79's avatar

never been overtaken by a woman, but driving practices are obviously different in every city

CaseyWVU10's avatar

Push on their brakes for absolutely no reason…argh

autumn43's avatar

@Jack79 – you haven’t driven in my city…

Kraigmo's avatar

Drivers who are in the left lane of the highway at speeds that match, or are less than, speeds to the lanes on their right. There’s no point for them to be in the left lane. People who do that have in incredible selfishness problem, and have a hard time seeing the big picture, while justifying their inanity on the posted speed limit.

Also, drivers who, when turning right, do so from the middle of the lane, instead of squeezing over to the shoulder where they belong.

Also, drivers who need more than 3 or 4 feet of space in front of them at stop lights; They cause bunchups behind them that clog up access to the left turn lane.

There is no excuse for any of the above behaviors.
