Can I mix granulated ferric oxide with granulated carbon in a media bag? Or does it have to be separate?

I rather not have to use separate media bags since I only have one, and since both GFO and GC are changed monthly. I have a 60g reef.

It’s the same water that goes through them whether they are separate or not. I had my marine tank in the dark ages, so I am no longer an expert, but it seems to me that carbon is non-reactive, and gfo is already oxidized; I don’t see what difference it can make.
