What's the best way to clean a stainless steel watch?

Asked by benvp (3points) September 25th, 2009

I have a seiko watch that is stainless steel throughout, and there’s grime on the wristband, the face, essentially every nook and cranny. Is there a good way to clean the watch, maybe by dipping it into a magical concoction of household items?

I wouldn’t dip it. I clean the stainless parts of my vintage cameras with q-tips and vinegar and elbow grease.

It’s stainless, lol. Anything would work I guess. Although, like @woods just said, I would use something vinegar based. The only thing I’d really worry about is the seems between the casing that can reach internals. I’d say your safe with Vinegar though, ;)

@woods what kind of elbow grease do you use?

@patg7590 – a secret organic hemp & fish oil based concoction. Just kidding… ;-)

I have a seiko watch that is stainless steel also.

I never take it off unless when going to bed. It is very twinkly.

How did it get that way?

Assuming it is water proof just wash it with dish washing liquid and a brush. Stainless steel really can’t be damaged..

I’ve tried many many things over the years and even ruined some very expensive (and some not so expensive watches)... what i found works best and won’t damage the watch is to just use any ordinary bar of soap… moisten a toothbrush… try to work up a paste on the surface of the soap with what little water is on the brush… pour a small ammount of water (a few drops will do) over the area of the watch to be cleaned. Brush lightly and thoroughly.
Rinse… and you’re done. Watch will gleam like new in 5 minutes flat.
