What's behind puppy breath?

Asked by AstroChuck (37609points) October 4th, 2009 from iPhone

Young puppies always have that pleasent “burnt” smell to their breath. Why is that? I don’t think it’s from mother’s milk because even weened puppies have this. Unfortunately it doesn’t last terribly long before regular dog breath takes over.
Any theories on this?

I’m with @chyna…there is nothing finer than puppy breath. If someone would have figured out how to bottle the stuff I wouldn’t have had so many dogs. Yes, it’s about time for another puppy around here! See ya….Gary/wtf

@whatthefluther New puppy? Yes! If I didn’t work so far from my home, I would have a new puppy too. It’s too hard to potty train when I’m gone 10 hours a day.
