To all with Subdermal Implant Knowledge...If i am going to have a tattoo-implant combo piece, is it better to put the implant in before or after the tattoo is done?

Asked by sunya13 (169points) October 19th, 2009

I am Getting a tattoo of the symbol for Sunyata in a Chinese brush style with Ink like Tentacles springing forth from it…which began to engulf my skull. I am considering putting matching custom made sub-dermal implants under the ink to give it the three dimensional impression! the vison in my head is blowing my mind,...lol….

but i need to know, for both the tattoo’s and the impant’s sake…which is better to do first…

Will it be difficult for an artist to tattoo over a implant?

will the impant cause scaring that will warp the pre existing tatoo?

what are my oppressions?

where can i find artists with experience in this type of project?

thank you all so much i love this site! PEACE ~SUNYA

Very cool…as far as I know, it is better to tattoo your skin first, let it heal for a couple of months and then do a subdermal…however the artist should be aware, when doing the tattoo, that the place where the subdermal will go will bump out a bit in the skin and keep that in mind when tattooing to allow for stretching…but I don’t think there will be all that much stretching…of course depends on the subdermal…either way..i want to see pics after

I second @Simone_De_Beauvoir – tattoo first.

sounds logical…i will take it into consideration with my artist (when i find the right one, i’m very cocious and picky…i see body modification as a spiritual practice, so the artist will need to facilitate that energy )....

as for posting pics i sure will…though it may not be for a while…i’m not going to rush this….gonna do it right the first time…

thanks to you both

Really? I would’ve thought the subdermal would damage the tattoo; but I guess if you have a good picture in your head so you know where everything should end up… I guess I should point out that I know next to nothing about such things! :-) But I’m interested!

I say, get a caster mold of said place of tattoo. Take it to the artist that is going to be doing the artwork and have him draw it on there and add in the “implants” for the dimensional effect. Let the artist do it since he’s the one that’s going to have to make it accent the implant to give it that “truely 3D” look. From there take it to the surgeon and show him where you want the implants to be done using the cast of your body part. Then after the recovery of the surgery let the artist finish the work.

great idea by the way. I think it could be a first.

My daughter is a body piercer, and she said you should get the tattoo work done first.
The tattoo artists don’t like working around jewelry, and the needles may hit the micro-dermal anchor. If you get the micro-dermal first, you run the risk of a bare patch where the jewelry is.

how to get an informed opinion:

1) join bme.com
2) ask on the BME forums

you’ll get more informed answers there than here.

Tattoo first then implant…you wouldn’t want anything getting in the way while the tattooist is at work….You should go to your tattoo artist and ask them too…
