What month do yellow jackets/bees start to die off?

Asked by ihatebeees2009 (7points) October 27th, 2009

It’s late october (almost halloween) and I just saw a queen yellow jacket land on my screen and stare me down ! It’s been cold and rainy here in Ohio and it’s been nice- no bees ! But with the recent high temps (high 60’s) the bees/Y/J’s are back-especially the queens and they are huge and nasty bitches !

When will they die and is there a place on earth that doesn’t have bees?

I HATE THEM !

I’m in New England in zone 5a; most of Ohio is warmer zones than that. I’m still seeing paper wasps although they’re pretty sluggish. Once you have a good cold spell they should be gone. Are you, like me, one of the people the yellowjackets come after??

I HATE bees, becuase they love me. I don’t have any flowers near my house, I actually pulled out 6 flowering bushes when we bought the house. When I lived in southeast Florida I rarely saw bees. The best house I ever owned had a large screened in patio/pool and I didn’t have to worry about bees, wasps, mosquitos, while enjoying my backyard. I loved living in my bubble.

I hate bee’s and wasps, basically anything and everything with a stinger. They were out yesterday, but they aren’t out today. It is too cold. But I don’t think there is a place where you can totally avoid bee’s.
Wait! I just thought of it, you could go to Antartica, it is too cold for them.

Awwww, you guys.. bees are so important!

JLeslie's avatar

@MissAnthrope Fine, just keep them away from my house.

Maybe they just think you’re sweet and want some bee lovins?

After a hard frost, the workers should be all gone. BUT, the queen you saw was probably looking for a place to hibernate. If you only saw her, she may have been all that was left of the colony near your home.

I wish I could find a photo of me in my bee costume, all I have is this one in my butterfly costume.

Let’s ask @Les. I doubt Antarctica has ever been seen by a bee. ;P

At least you don’t have to worry about Japanese hornets.
Those things freak me out. Seriously, they actually hunt bees.

@ekans I saw a thing about the Japanese Hornets, on a Nation Geographic show. It was very creepy, and listening to the guys describe how it feels, and the size, and how relentless they are, really scared me.

@ekans Holy f**k! I wish I had not clicked on your link. I would have been much happier going through life not know Japenese hornets existed. :)

@shego and @JLeslie
Being about twenty feet away from one of their hives is closer than I ever wanted to be to them.

shego's avatar

@ekans you have seen them in real life? You are very brave.

ekans's avatar

@shego Yes, although I didn’t intend to. I found a hive at a shrine in Japan, in the Arashiyama district of Kyoto.
needless to say, I stayed away from that area of the shrine

I am so glad I did not know about this when I was in Japan.
