Odd question: In which way can humans and potatoes equal dogs?

Asked by Haroot (2123points) November 3rd, 2009

Very weird question, yes I know.

A friend of mine stated, “humans+potatoes=dogs,” and asked me why. And I have no idea. I don’t know if it relates to chemistry (his attended major,) or if it’s just a simple brain teaser.

Any ideas?

I know uncooked potatoes can be extremely harmful to both humans and dogs… other than that i see no correlation.

Haroot's avatar

Yeah. Because of solanine right? I guessed that but he said no.

Here’s my thought process:

Potatoes are food, and to dogs, humans are food, so subsituting the food for humans and potatoes equals food for dogs!

too much nyquil…

Perhaps he was saying that dogs are dumber than humans?

RedPowerLady's avatar

@ubersiren That was my initial guess as well.

i think he’s playing with your brain-knowing you’ll keep trying to figure it out!

gemiwing's avatar

have you tried working it out in chemical shorthand? H,U,Ma etc?

Sounds similar to the question “Do you walk to work or carry your lunch.”

@Dr_C – I love raw potatoes, I have been eating them all my life, why are they not good for me? My mom used to say we would get worms if we ate too many but I always figured that was an old wives tale or she never would have given them to us in the first place.

Maybe dogs are better than humans because we need potatos to be equal?

Ha I think we should Email Marc Horowitz this Question.
And he can ask the TRANCEHORSE!!!

Do not forget to ponder the other implications!
Dogs – Potatoes = Humans?
Dogs – Humans = Potatoes?

It seems to me that the couch factor has been omitted. Both humans and dogs love to lie on couches. Thus both are equivalent to (couch) potatoes. Hence the equation should really be:

(Humans+Dogs)Couch = Potatoes

rooeytoo's avatar

@Haroot – when do we get the answer??? You can’t just let us hanging like this.

@Darwin – that makes pretty much sense, that could be it.

Beta_Orionis's avatar

@Darwin AND “Couch Potato” has a negative conotation for Humans, and a positive factor for dogs, which makes the math sound!

(Dogs – Humans) – (in the presence of couches) -> Dogs

Has anyone tried @gemiwing‘s approach? I thought it was a great guess. Humans would be H (hydrogen) + Potatoes could be P, or Po, or Pt = Dogs could be K (potassium) for K9 or something? I’m really terrible at this, but maybe someone smarter could figure it out.

He says it a chromosome thing. Something about our 23 pairs, plus the addition ones a potato has, would leave us equivalent to a dog.

This isn’t really my field so I don’t really understand it. Kinda disappointing though. I was expecting a slightly more clever answer.

Thanks for trying though.

Beta_Orionis's avatar

@Haroot Ahhh. I was expecting something really clever too. Alas! Still interesting!

Darwin's avatar

So we have 23 chromosome pairs, and the potato has 24 chromosome pairs. However, the dog has 39 pairs of chromosomes. Since when does 23 + 24 = 39?

Must be the new math.

Haroot's avatar

@Darwin Apparently, 16 of the 24 chromosome pairs of a Potato are not present in the Human body. Those 16 included with out 23 make the dog 39. I don’t know. I guess it makes sense.

Darwin's avatar

We share chromosomes with the potato? No wonder we are so out of shape these days.

ILLUMINUTTY's avatar

they both share the same Universal Star matter.
