What are some ways I could decorate a dresser?

Asked by Lacroix (537points) November 11th, 2009

My parents contributed to my new house by (among other things) giving me a bedroom dresser.

It is plain wood, painted a light beige, and rather “flat” in that it has no decorative features. Even the handles are single, long oval-shaped wooden pulls in the very center of the drawers.

It’s a strong, sturdy piece that I’d love to keep, but how can I fix it up to reflect my bizarre/eclectic tastes?

Sand; glue on découpage, seal with several coats of flat polyurethane.

Paint it. Also, If the handles are easily removed, buy some cool hardware for it. If you’re a little more advanced, you could add moldings to the drawer fronts, too. Have fun with it!

decoupage can be fun too if you have the right pictures.
Edit:Oh darn. @gailcalled answered while I was looking for the perfect picture!!

I’m currently painting bland kids furniture pieces for my son. I say, paint it to your liking! Then seal with varnish to allow for ease of cleaning and to seal your handicraft.

The other thing I thought I’ve that I’ve seen look fantastic but can’t find an online image right now is to use multiple shades of stain, as you would with paint, then seal it. I would go to the hardware store and look for interesting pulls that fit your taste as the pulls may give you inspiration as to how you want the rest of the piece to look.

Make you own stickers or get some of things you normally enjoy. (music acts, slogans, etc..)

decorative mouldings also can help add more style to a plain piece. think shelf edging, scrolls, medallions, etc. how about upholstery tacks edging a faux leather top?

Paint it…....change the drawer pulls…....buy decorative moldings to give it depth and interest. Then….find a different place to use it…..in a hallway for linens,or remove the mirror use that somewhere else and keep the bottom part for a TV stand and use the drawers for DVDs.

I love white paint…in all gradations….it keeps it neutral and fresh….but use what inspires you.

How exciting for you…..! Best of luck!

The store Anthropologie sells some really interesting handles and pulls…I have seen people take pretty boring pieces of furniture and really dress them up by adding some cool handles/knobs.

here is the link to some of the knobs/handles that Anthropologie is selling online…some of these are pricey, so check the sale section too.
